── ✶ 𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐔𝐄 & 𝐓𝐀𝐆𝐋𝐈𝐒𝐓
The soft moonlight sneaked through the curtains of the great hall. It was dark outside; the moon had come out a few hours ago, and you could imagine how the little owls woke up from a long, long nap.
The night was a whole different world, you thought to yourself. In the light of day, everyone had to follow what society imposed. However, under the quiet night sky, when no one was watching, they let themselves be a bit more... real. A little more like themselves and a little less of how people thought they were.
Nevertheless, that was not a quiet night at the palace. And everyone was surely watching every small movement.
The classical music filled your ears while the nobles who attended danced alongside their partners. Some of them might even become a married couple someday.
A rumour had once circulated at the bakery where you had worked for quite some time — before getting caught up in all this spy thing— about how dances could predict marriage. They said a single waltz could define your whole life and that you have to treasure those with whom you danced, because eventually they might become something more. Something you might or might not like at all.
You let a soft chuckle out of your lips. Your first thought was that it was a bit dramatic. But now that you went (sneaked in) to your first ever ball, you could see it in their eyes.
From the corner you were at, trying not to get too much attention, you could see how some eyes sparkled when they accepted one dance. As if they deeply loved that person and not the other five people they dances with that night. How some hands touched for quite a few seconds more than appropriate for someone who supposedly did not know each other.
You could see those eyes turning dark when they had to accept a dance they didn’t want to do either. When some people smiled at them as if they were smiling at prey. You saw that too, how waltz might symbolise interest more than love.
Society was a wicked world to be born in, you thought.
And yet…
Maybe it was better than the job you actually had.
The clock pointed exactly at ten o’clock then.
The orchestra stopped playing. The nobles stopped dancing. And you, you could feel how the anticipation started to grow in your stomach.
You fixed your posture more quickly than when your father told you to do so.
It was time. The time you were waiting for all those hours you were standing there like a stick.
Remember the plan, yn. No one has to notice you, or you’ll be in great trouble. You just have to get that object, that crown, and everything will be worth it. You just have to get to the second prince.
The king was the first one to enter the room. He was wearing formal clothing and a shawl, which looked pretty heavy on him. Followed by him, the oldest son, and a bit farther away, the second prince.
Shinyu.
He looked so… woah.
He was breathtaking. You could feel your cheeks getting redder and redder with each passing minute.
Get yourself together, yn!, you scolded yourself, you could not have this reaction to his presence. Even if he looked so… good. Even if he smiled at you, among all those people.
You had never seen him in his prince clothes. And he looked… stunning. You weren’t able to not look at him. He was mesmerising.
How can someone be this handsome? You thought, your heart bumping so fast you swore it was going to escape your chest. This has to be illegal.
Still, some time had to go by until Shinyu could properly get to you. Prince things first, he thought, not very pleased with it.
You didn’t go unnoticed by him, though. Not at all.
Maybe all the eyes were on him and his brother, “the golden singles”; but all he could look at was you.
In a corner of the room, with that beautiful dress you had probably spent hours mending and making it look so... gorgeous.
That shade of pink which painted your dress would forever stay in Shinyu’s retina until the day he died.
You were… woah.
Woah.
There was no word that could describe the thing you were making him feel. Not a single one could capture all the emotions in his chest.
You were so distracting he even mixed names while greeting everyone in the room and stumbled with his words. He was rather clumsy that night.
And it was because of you.
So when he had the chance, he got away from his boring and pointless prince duties and instinctively ended up beside you.
It had become something natural by now.
“Hi, miss.” He leaned against the wall, next to you, giving a gentle but at the same time teasing smile.
“Prince,” you replied with a smirk on your face, doing a small reverence.
“I didn’t expect you to be here.” He mumbled, getting a bit closer. “You weren’t invited, were you?”
“Well, a girl has her own ways. You don’t have to be invited to be somewhere.” You snorted.
Shinyu smiled. Widely. As if he was really happy to have you here with him.
He was definitely part of the first kind of people with those sparkling eyes and that wide smile.
It made your heart flutter to think you were part of those too.
“You know? People here are too boring. I’m glad you are here.”
“Boring? I find them to be rather interesting.” You teased him.
“Interesting? Have you seen them? I’ve been one hour standing there, and the only thing they have said to me is ‘Oh, Prince, you look so good today,’ and I think they mistook me with my brother at least thrice”. He rolled his eyes.
You let out a chuckle. “Well, I mean, they surely are right. You look stunning today, Junghwan.”
Now he was blushing. So hard he even felt ashamed and hid his face from you. Even if he didn’t know anymore if he was blushing because of the compliment or for the fact that you called him by his name.
“Thank… you.” He said, breathlessly.
You smiled at him.
“You look pretty today too.” He mumbled. “Well- you always are, it's not that you aren’t normally but-“
You snorted. “I get it. Thanks, Shinyu.”
Shinyu smiled, relieved. He liked that about you. How things felt just so… easy around you.
All eyes were on you and on Shinyu. No one knew who you were. But they knew who the guy beside you was and how he never approached any girl in the room first. So they all were questioning then who that girl in pink was. Which made you quite uncomfortable, by the way.
Well, I guess there is no plan anymore, because now everybody knows who I am. I’m screwed, you thought, sighing inside your mind.
Shinyu was quick to notice it. He was used to people staring at him, but you weren’t, he knew that. He looked at you.
“Hey. You know what? Let’s escape this boring place.” He got up and grabbed your hand. “I know exactly the right place where no one will bother us.”
You smiled at him. You didn’t know if that would help the situation, but… it was better than standing there.
“Okay.” You nodded and grabbed the hand he had extended to you.
And so, you disappeared from the curious looks of people, getting lost in that huge palace.
Shinyu had indeed taken you to another place. It was a small garden where you could still hear the soft murmur of the orchestra. The flowers were blooming, and the trees were moving because of the wind.
A soft breeze made your hair move.
He was smiling. You smiled too.
In here you could stop pretending you didn't know him. You could stop pretending you are just too "cool" l to not care about it.
In here, you really felt like holding him and never letting him go.
Maybe because even if you didn’t want to show it, you were starting to fall for that man you were supposed to hoax. For that man with beautiful brown eyes and too much love for the world you lived in.
He held your hand, eyes sparkling, and asked: “Would you dance this one with me?”
“Of course.” You nodded, your smile widening. You did not even hesitate. Even if a dance could define your life. It was okay if it was him.
The orchestra started to play again. It was a known song; you knew that. A soft piece.
Pas de Deux.
What a song choice, you thought to yourself. It wasn’t a waltz and yet… it fitted perfectly how you felt.
None of this was real and at the same time… it was the most alive you had felt in years.
You started spinning around with Shinyu’s hand on your hip, while your hand rested on his shoulder.
You did not quite know how to dance, but that didn’t matter to Shinyu.
“Auch!” He complained from time to time.
“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry!” You’d say, blushing. “I’m so bad at this, gosh.”
He’d laugh and make you spin more and more. “Stop thinking about that; we’re having fun!” And then you’d laugh once again.
“You are so clumsy, yn,” he’d tease you later anyway. You’d roll your eyes.
Just as silly as you could be. Because it was Shinyu. And Shinyu started to feel a little like your safe space.
Even if the plan was still going on your mind — the way your father looked at you when he told you this was going to be your first mission — you just wished to stay with him a little more. Just you and him. Like this.
In a place where he can be just Junghwan and in a place where you can just be Yn.
Shinyu had taken you to one last place.
Just where you had to go, following the plan.
People had gone to their homes a couple of hours ago, but you weren’t sleepy at all. You just wanted to stay there with him.
Ah, young crazy love.
You both were on the floor of that big room, with reddish curtains and gold accessories.
It was so pretty.
And you know what was prettier than that?
Shinyu.
He was holding your face with such gentleness in his eyes, and looking at you as if you were just what he had been looking for all these years.
“You are so pretty,” he muttered softly. “The prettiest girl I have ever seen.”
He looked star-struck.
“You must not have seen many girls.” You joked at him, putting a lock of hair behind his ear.
He snorted. “I’ve seen more girls than I’d wanted to.” He confessed. “But you are still the most gorgeous one.”
That made you blush. Your cheeks turned pink, and your eyes looked away.
“Thank you.” You mumbled. “You are the most handsome man I have ever met too. Like if you were directly the son of Aphrodite.”
He smirked. His hand turned your face, making you look directly at his eyes now. His beautiful brown eyes.
The prince got closer and closer to you, and softly pressed his lips against yours in a gentle kiss.
One of those which made you linger for more.
You kissed him back, eagerly, and placed your hand in his stupid silky brown hair, intertwining your fingers with it.
Passion overflowed you both.
And, behind all that noise in your heart, you could even find something brighter. Something golden. Something you had never experienced before.
Love.
A love that could not last too long in that world, but a love that, being there, you wanted to fight for.
How you hated him.
But oh, how you loved him at the same time.
“Yn.” He mumbled, breathless. “I love you so much.”
Your eyes started to water at that point.
There was no point in doing this.
Tomorrow everything will have vanished.
And yet…
And yet, your heart failed you.
You felt like you were running a race.
And it was because of him.
So you decided to pretend.
Pretend like the next day you would still be there, hugging him and wishing him good morning on the cold floor of that room.
Pretend as if it wasn’t crazy to think you loved him.
Pretend as if it could happen.
So you said it. You let it go.
Tomorrow it won’t matter. But today it does.
“I love you too, Shin Junghwan.”
Among all the lies you once told, this one was the brightest truth you could have ever said to him. And that is how you two went to sleep. With a smile tugging your lips and your fingers intertwined.
Just like a pair of lovers.
The next day, when Shinyu woke up, he was alone.
You were nowhere to be found, and neither was his crown.
He did not find you ever again, no matter how much he searched for you in empty spaces, in the corner of his room, or at the bakery.
You had disappeared.
Destiny was a difficult thing to challenge, he now knew that.
But he would always remember the girl who stumbled upon him. The girl who worked hard in the bakery. The girl who stole his crown and his heart.
