reading the notes on a post about book discourse and saw multiple people refer to "smut jumpscares" or "porn jumpscares" as being prevalent in books, and I swear to god I don't understand what this could possibly refer to. what books are you reading where explicit sexual content happens so abruptly and unexpectedly that it can be likened to a jumpscare. I've never in my life been jumpscared by smut. what books are these. what specific passages

I would say I've read one book that qualified as a porn jump scare, and I don't even remember if it was actual porn. But it was a fantasy novel whose entire premise was basically this one guy learning the five different magic systems in this world. And then at about the halfway point there's an unexplained magical accident off screen, and he rescues a once-named female character from a chimera in a very uncharacteristic fashion, and then proceeds to have sex with her. This never features again in the novel.

I have a research background in weight stigma and I currently work in mental health, often with LGBTQ+ clients.

I've met nonbinary people who struggle with disordered eating because they only ever see androgyny depicted as featureless thinness.

I've met trans women who struggle with disordered eating because they've internalized the idea that girls are meant to be thin, dainty, and delicate.

I've men trans men who struggle with disordered eating, because they feel women are allowed to be soft/curvy but men need to be muscular or thin and flat.

So many trans people are convinced that weight loss is the key to appearing as their desired gender, even when they want radically different gender presentations.

The societal idealization of thinness and fatphobia falsely invades and derails people's idea of what their "ideal body" should look like.

I’ve been tinkering with the idea of an urban fantasy “All Fairy Tales Are True” setting where some fairy tale characters are mortals who reincarnate and live through their story again and again with no memory of their past lives, but other characters are immortal, carrying over biases and grudges and regrets from the last time they went through this.

Snow White’s dwarves keep her room exactly as she left it, and keep a wary eye on the horizon for the day she returns. When she does they treat her like a beloved daughter come home, cook her favourite meals, warn her to stay away from apples this time, and keep calling her the wrong name.

Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother found her a touch ungrateful last time, and has decided not to appear to her this time around to teach her a lesson in gratitude. This Cinderella, without the memory of the last time, is still a terrified, miserable woman desperate to escape her awful situation.

The Witch in the gingerbread house has developed a thousand traps to eat those goddamned kids. She’s failed every time. She lives a life of Sisyphean torment previously known only to cartoon coyotes.
