Hello : ) You can call me Aimé, Collerico or any other name that has sprouted from your fervid imagination. They pronouns only, but I don't care about being called girl/dude etc., go crazy!
More about the user: my favourite animals are cows, my favourite kind of tea is earl grey & I have been known to sigh really deeply very often. Here's two truths and a lie: I am ambidextrous, I'm a morning person, I never kill bugs (not even mosquitoes!).
About the blog & housekeeping
Want to know who I am named after? Click HERE!
This is an eclectic depository for the things I care about, and at times even things I don't really care about but that appeal to me! This is, also, for the most part a writing/fandom blog.
I do engage with media that has themes of incest, sexual abuse and general violence; my fascination in the literary/artistic performance of such themes stems both from an academic interest and from personal experience, and thus I try to engage with them in what I feel like is the most well informed manner, still I do not have a specific tag for these things as they are quite pervasive to my Pursuits so feel free to block me.
Other interests that aren't fandom-specific: medieval history&literature; poetry; ecological niches; stationery; ceramics; botany; rhizomatic systems; the sexual politics of meat (intersection between feminism, communism and veganism); the theodicy of suffering; terrible women & horrible men; familial dynamics; the Haunting Ghost of Gender etc. I'm sure I'm forgetting other things, but you'll know soon enough.
Tag directory
Most of my fandom posts are tagged with either the acronym or the full name, sometimes both. Every movie I watch is tagged with [movie name]+[year of release], I could forget the year but I'll fix it sooner or later. As for the books/quotes I only tag the author's name, same thing goes for paintings/art.
Fanfiction/snippets are tagged my writing. Asks are tagged quaestiones, my original text posts that don't fall in any other category are tagged it speaks, often they are personal, they could be deleted. Generally OK to reblog.
Most of the tags are quite self-explanatory but I do have some other specific ones:
but I beneath a rougher sea -> waves/water/the ocean;
empedocles on etna -> mountains!
innere -> rooms I would like to be inside of;
livewire -> creatures...
let us dance -> music! Audio!
pater -> my tag for bears & boars. I know I said my favourite animals are cows, but I love bears & boars dearly;
reading theory to play with my concepts -> what it says on the tin, in the most boring way I like period dramas and I want to be Informed when portraying something;
reeling feeding feeling -> poignant prose I want to keep track of;
sein und zeit -> being & time! Other concepts I'm fond of, the underlying sense of yeatsian Tragic Joy that comes along with being a human;
this slow disrobing of summer -> metaphysical explanations for tangible truths (middle seasons).
I have a running queue but it isn't tagged, which means once a day you might see a reblog from me although I'm not here. This, as it has been explained to me, is what it means to be an online Presence.

yeah ok i saw that pic of a lighthouse you reblogged and now i need gale to be a lighthouse keeper and sure i know nothing about that but i imagine it is just long, existential, slow and introspective lonely days until, until! a certain john egan crashes/sinks in a storm close by and lighthouse keeper gale saves him, maybe just! maybe its almost doom for him as well. but alas he saves egan, and carries his unconscious body? by some adrenaline fueled force up to his lighthouse and idk passes out of sheer exhaustion and comes to it sometime later when the storm has passed and nurses john back to health and they live in a lighthouse now and it's meager living probably but they dont need much and i cant stress enough how much they need to share one tiny lighthouse bed unfortunately and gale smokes pipe and is a bit depressed and maybe has issues that john can help with or, at least, point out to him and urge him to be less self destructive in all of his melancholy but, gale does have a passionate sex life now so thats a plus
This is so !! Let's all close our eyes and have fun picturing this.
I'm extremely drawn to the Unpeopled Boundaries of Experience; to Solitude as something both sought after & abhorred. It's often posited to be the condition without which a Higher Understanding (of oneself - of the World) cannot be reached, because by eliminating Witnesses, except for the natural world around The Hermit – which to me is also interesting, and says something about our not yet deconstructed Human Individuality. Why is the Natural world a neutral observer? Are we not part of the natural world? Is it not as self-absorbed to think of ourselves as a plague than it is to think of ourselves as a solution? – it supposedly allows for the Consciousness to reach a Supra-Natural dimension, through contemplation & silence & just overall an awful time.
I don't really subscribe to this philosophy of enlightened suffering, but I think Thoreau (obviously) has beautifully put one of the reasons why we're so drawn to this:
We need the tonic of wildness—to wade sometimes in marshes where the bittern and the meadow-hen lurk, and hear the booming of the snipe; to smell the whispering sedge where only some wilder and more solitary fowl builds her nest, and the mink crawls with its belly close to the ground.
At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be infinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature. [...] We need to witness our own limits transgressed, and some life pasturing freely where we never wander.
I think lighthouses are on the Confines of Humanity, so they are a perfect match for #ourGale.
He does read as a taciturn-loner character, though to me he's also someone who values solitude not because he doesn't like other people – he's fun, entertaining, a bit of a show off, he deeply cares about his men, and he has a sense of Duty – but because he fundamentally doesn't like himself. Or at least certain parts of his Self (his vulnerability, speculatively his queerness, too).
The Army isn't a place where one can be Alone, but transporting him into a scenario in which he is a lighthouse keeper is a great way to explore these exacerbated traits of his!
I also like lighthouses as haunting places of service. You're alone & you're tasked with the life of other people; you're alone & the Sea is right there with you. It's not being In It & it's not being Next to It. You're being subsumed by your duty, you're a beacon and not a man & your house is your place of work, your residence and your cage.
They're also the ideal Location to be working on Radios, which is something about Gale's character that I find so endearing : ) & so fascinating as well: you're broadcasting signals into the atmosphere & the atmosphere carries them for you; I think he'd like radio-dramas, I think maybe he'd sit down with a cup of coffee & socks that need mending & HIS PIPE! (his oral fixation...) & he'd listen to his Mysteries and Comedies #smiling. There could be many Signs & Symbols about Hearing a Disembodied Voice from Far Away & said Voice keeping Gale company. I find it deeply romantic, and I believe Gale wouldn't mind being alone because he can entertain himself endlessly but the problem is that he's stagnating & shriveling, a tree trying to grow into its own roots.
Cue, of course, John Egan... I like the prospect of him coming not from the sea, but from the air – crash landing, maybe. John - well. He's a fun guy, he's a cuckoo clock, he's an indolent drunk with a liver the size of his head and a heart three times bigger. And Maybe the plane crashed willingly, but as he finds him the only thing Gale knows is that he's a heavy bastard who's almost bled through his mattress (Gale has spent the night in watchful silence sitting in his armchair).
Once John wakes up, at first there is the You tried to kill yourself but you failed shameful recognition, then John sees Gale, who's lost his battle to sleep. He sees his gaunt cheeks and his long eyelashes, his round mouth, the width of his shoulders; is this the sign he was searching for? Even if it isn't, he's going to grab it with both hands and not let go. Gale wakes up, too, and a lightning strikes outside. This is a story about the weather!
After dutiful presentations, they're left to their own devices. Gale knows how to take care of himself because he has to, but he's not a doctor. The recovery takes time. It's frankly a miracle John's survived – he's got broken ribs & Gale has to help him to and from the bathroom, which in any case would have been an undignified experience even if he were to be able to do it himself (the bathroom is outside). At one point, Gale offers his radio, to contact someone, anyone, but John refuses. He says there's no one who'd want to hear from him (he hasn't set it up right!!). Gale is secretly glad; he'd forgotten how beautiful an annoyance could be.
And it's not like John is idling away, though he really should be laying still. He knows how to knit (the middle brother of two sisters), he knows how to cook, he knows so many stories – fun, sad, stories about planes and love and the meeting place of Sky and Sea –, he provokes Gale, he makes fun of him, he mends all his socks and sweaters, he breaks one of his radios by accident and they argue and scream and Gale says I'm not going to hurt you because you can't do it yourself. John laughs, he gets closer and even beaten and broken he's all-encompassing. He says: You think you're better than me? You think I don't feel you at night, shivering next to me?
Because this is a story about the weather, a window shuts closed and a thunder makes the glass shudder, and they have terrible sex: the lighthouse offers lamp oil but John refuses to use it as lubrication, so they only get spit & prayers & John's ribs are still tender & he's probably got a broken leg, too, so Gale has to ride him. It hurts too much & he doesn't know how to make it good; John is hurting too because Gale keeps putting his weight on his ribcage & biting his collarbones to suffuse his groans. It's fast and they cum but only God knows why or how.
Gale doesn't say anything. He gets up, gets dressed, and leaves John in his bed (it's theirs, at this point), half-naked, breathing hard, crying a little bit at his own cruelty. He feels he forced Gale into a corner, like he's keeping a fish out of the water just to see how big their lungs are.
Outside, Gale is walking too close to the cliff's edge, trying to make sense of what's happening, what's been happening. John gets up, too, he hops and wobbles. Of course, as this is a story about the weather, it's raining. A gentle drizzle promising bigger waves, but it's enough to make the grass path over the cliff treacherous. John slips and falls down and Gale sees his slow descent & runs down to him, almost breaks his neck, he falls down too and skins his knees in the rush to reach him, to get him off the ground & to bring him back inside, where they each catalogue their tiny hurts and their huge wounds, this time careful and slow, this time kissing, whispering connections of lips and tongue.
In the end, they sit down at the small table of the kitchenette, over two mugs of coffee, hair still damp, and don't say anything. They understand that what they did cannot be erased from their memories, maybe they don't want to.
John tells Gale he's going to have to turn up the light soon (it's a story about weather!) & Gale says Don't tell me how to do my job, John. And shave your damned mustache, it gave me a rash. And it's ugly to boot.

My prompt is literally anything causbut related!!! (Maybe some angel Austin 👀)
When Callum wakes up, he knows it's too early. These days Austin's been making a racket in the mornings trying to use their new espresso machine, but right now it's blissfully quiet out there so Callum turns onto his side, bunches up the comforter under his chin, and prepares to settle into a time-killing hour of scrolling.
Not so blissfully, he only gets three reels in before his door clicks open. "Hey," he greets, raspy, and chokes on the word when he sees Austin standing there stark naked. Again. "Aus. Seriously. Clothes first, door second."
"I have a question, though," Austin says. There's no shame to be found in the way he keeps standing there. "I need your help."
Callum groans. "With what?"
"With this," Austin says, gesturing.
"It's morning wood, I already told you—"
"No," Austin cuts in, doing the worst thing he can do at the moment and moving further into the room. Callum tries not to look, tactically maneuvering the phone to block out his lower body. "That went away like you said. And then I was just lying there thinking and it came back and it won't stop."
He moves even closer. Callum squints one eye. "What—like, were you—what were you thinking about?"
"You," Austin says, unapologetic.
GOOOOOOOOOAL, screams Callum's phone, still playing through Chelsea highlights via Telemundo. He scrambles to turn it off but the ensuing silence is even worse because all he can hear now is his own breathing and Austin is standing right next to the bed like he expects Callum to abracadara him back to flaccid in an instant.
"Just touch yourself then," Callum says in a thin voice. "Go have a wank."
"I tried to. I couldn't, uh—do it right. I guess. There was chafing."
Austin flits his gaze away. Somehow it makes Callum feel better that there's at least a tiny level of shared humiliation here. And shared thoughts, evidently, because his own dreams have been full of fucked up shit. He'd had this exact one last week, actually. Austin in his room, kneeling and staring at him in his guileless manner and just. Waiting.
"It smells nice in here," Austin observes. "You smell nice," he adds, absently running a hand low over his stomach, like he doesn't even realize he's doing it.
Callum swallows. The noise seems cavernous in his head. "You have to keep thinking about what makes you feel good," he tries, thinking back to his first forays into masturbation. There's not much to remember other than panicked secrecy and the loads of laundry and his mum putting a few outrageous water bills on his desk to make a point. "It's just something you figure out for yourself over time, you get me?"
"I was born like three months ago," Austin points out.
"Don't—!" Callum balls up his hands and presses them against his eyes. "Don't say that. Christ."
When he peers past his fists, he sees Austin still petting over the prickly hair on his stomach, and then suddenly he's tugging at his balls with way too much force. Before Callum can think about it, he grabs Austin's wrist, hissing, "Ease up a little," and Austin listens to him, not fighting back in the slightest.
"Cal," he says. He's fully hard now, fidgety on his feet as a thin layer of shine edges his temples in obvious distress. "Can you at least show me a video so I know? I think you turned on safesearch last time and I can't get to anything."
Callum had indeed turned on safesearch, only because Austin kept plugging his credit card info into porn scam sites. Against all better judgement, he finds himself wavering. This could be like another job, he reasons. Another role. Or he's just helping someone out. A jerk off shaman of sorts.
His dick and brain come to a compromise, although his brain feels drugged and has little to contribute. "Alright. Forget the video, come here," he relents, sitting up and slinging one leg off the bed while leaving the other crooked outward as much as his hips will allow, and then he sputters, "Wait, Jesus," because Austin gets onto the mattress facing him and Callum has to force him to turn around, putting his hands to bare skin until he's got his back against Callum's front. "Like this, okay?"
"But I don't get to see you," Austin complains mildly.
Callum closes his eyes for a moment, very much stuck between a rock and a literal fucking hard place. Either Austin will feel every single twitch of his dick, or he'll have to see the expression on Callum's face the whole time. There's always the secret third option of throwing himself out the window but preferably they're going to get through this without associating hard-ons with death.
"It's fine like this," Callum decides. "You can just imagine me again."
He tucks his face past Austin's shoulder as Austin grumbles but settles into the space that Callum's made for him, and he's quiet as Callum runs his hands over his body, getting used to the feel of it. Lean everywhere, and sleep-warm, skin sheathed onto muscles that are usually hidden away under an oversized tee and a pair of joggers. Callum really should get started but instead he keeps touching, telling himself he's mapping the terrain to get it right the first time.
"That feels really nice," Austin sighs. "You've got nice hands. I think about them a lot."
"Yeah?" Callum breathes. He flattens his palm against Austin's. They spread their fingers against each other. "Yours are almost as big," he says, using his free hand to cover over Austin's pec. When he runs a nail over the edge of his nipple, Austin makes a funny hiccuping noise. "See? You kinda just do what feels—"
"Do it again," Austin says.
Callum does it again. There's another hiccup and Austin sags against him, automatically reaching to grip himself, but Callum knocks him off course, sinking further into his role and ordering, "Alright, here. Lick my hand," and Austin grabs his wrist immediately. The scrape of his tongue is startling, wet and eager, and before Callum can help it he's crooking his thumb in a cue. An equally wet and eager mouth closes around it and Callum bites back a groan, rubbing over the inner curve of Austin's thigh where he's mostly peach fuzz and soft skin. "More. Really wet. Wetter the better. You listening?"
Austin obeys. Soon enough there's minty fresh spit coating Callum's hand, some of it trickling down the other side between his tendons. "Are you gonna—oh," Austin says, and then a garbled mouthful of consonants as Callum gets his cock in a loose grip. "Cal. Oh. That's…"
"Watch," Callum chides, focused on stroking up and down and avoiding anything else for now. He's certainly watching, and maybe he's also thrusting into Austin's back a little bit, but no one can prove that. Not even Austin, who keeps squirming around until Callum wraps an arm over his belly to hold him still, heartbeat thundering through the both of them.
It's been a long time since he's gone this slow with anyone. There's something hypnotic about being tangled up in his own bed, morning light leaking around the curtains and the bulk of Austin relaxing into him in enough skin-to-skin contact to make them sweat. Callum keeps up a lazy pace, just shy of teasing; loosens the crossbar of his arm a bit to allow Austin to pump his hips because he should get familiar with that motion too, all while Callum praises him, tells him to make it good for himself.
"Are you learning? Cause I'm not gonna do this for you next time." Abruptly he squeezes hard, gives Austin a few mean passes and finally rubs his thumb over the shiny head, receiving a gratifying response of Austin getting even wetter, one hand fisting the comforter and the other groping around to find slippery purchase over Callum's nape.
"Why not?" Austin gasps.
"See one, teach one, do one," Callum recites, a line from an old audition to play a medical resident. The show's already been canceled but he's found it to be a pretty good motto for general use.
"I never saw you," Austin hitches. "I never. Saw you."
"You wanna watch me?" Callum echoes.
His cotton underwear isn't hiding anything anymore, if it ever was in the first place. He gives up the ghost and pulls Austin into him even tighter, grinding against his back, and figures, fuck it. Fuck it straight into whatever heavenly world Austin claims he's from. "You wanna watch me, or do you want me"—he glides a finger down over Austin's perineum—"here," pushing against his hole, a deliberate pressure that has Austin blabbering, "There, yes—oh fuck—Callum, fuck, what the fuck—"
Callum shushes him. Presses a kiss to his dampened hair, not letting up, just watching Austin drip onto his stomach, going faster when he starts trembling.
"I would ruin you," Callum says roughly, into his ear, and Austin tenses, then comes with a grunt so loud it sounds like a shot in the otherwise silent room.
The noise knocks Callum out of his trance. He's always been too quick to post-nut clarity, which is supremely unfair in this case because he's not even the one who came. What he's left with is a filthy, sticky hand, a throbbing dick, and a sweaty mess in his lap, Austin draped perpendicularly over it and panting like he cycled his way to orgasm.
Callum takes in the sight. He even manages to appreciate it for a second before that fucking brain of his clocks back in and flips on the switches to guilt and shame, and hovers a neuronal finger above the switch to regret.
Belatedly, he says, "I didn't mean that."
"Okay," Austin mumbles. "But you moaned."
"I what?"
"You moaned," Austin repeats. "I heard you. It was hot."
"I'm a sympathetic cummer," Callum dismisses.
Austin laughs breathlessly. "Okay," he agrees, laying a hand over his forehead, looking as much like some delicate maiden as he can while covered in spunk. "Thank you, Cal. You're a good teacher."
(Callum turns off safesearch afterward and then finds tons of searches for 'sympathetic cummer'.)
lay it on me doc how essential is latin foe the study of medieval history asking for a friend
Well, very I'd say, but it depends on your level of commitment & on your interests.
If you're trying to do any sort of 'original' research you're going to have to make your peace with it & learn it, as every document is in Latin (and not classical Latin either which is both a blessing and a curse because sometimes you're transcribing an evangelistary & you've been plucking your eyebrows out of stress & you're not understanding what a word is & it turns out it oievovae which is Not a word just an exclamation). In the later middle ages Vernacular gets more widespread & a great deal of manuscripts are written in it, but Latin is still the lingua franca. What's actually also something you'll have to deal with is paleography as both a discipline and a tool. I'm saying this assuming you're interested in Medieval Europe, obviously if you care about other areas Latin is not going to be your primary language.
But if you've found yourself interested in Medieval history & you want to learn More without relying on primary sources then Latin is going to be a very useful tool for textual analysis, but not something you should worry about. In this regard, what I'd say matters more are Contemporary languages, especially French & German.
Lastly, I'm saying this to reassure you: my Latin is not Great. I was lucky enough that I'd been studying it seriously in highschool & now it's become highly specialised (I focus a lot on notarised documents meaning the language is highly formulaic) but I'm not like Fluent in it, or rather, all my translations are only Useful and never Pretty. It's like an old bike that is eaten away by rust but that still works and only sometimes creaks lol!
Also, the resources are plentiful if you want to learn (assuming English is your first language: the Cambridge course is the best for internalising classical Latin which is still the base for Medieval Latin!) It's going to take time, but it's never too late...

When he’s done, Bucky makes a cigarette and a lighter appear out of thin air. Blinking at the spark of fire in the otherwise dark room Gale categorizes each sensation. His ass hurts, he starts with the most immediate. It hurts and he knew it would hurt: he’d conceptualized it in his vulgar daydreams, those he couldn’t even bear to share with himself as the only witness to his reprobation. He’d pictured it as the pain of a paper cut, invisible and infection-hot, impossible to deal with.
At fifteen an older boy named Jack would tell Gale and his friends about this girl, Mary, and her tight little asshole, and he’d say – even though by his own admission he couldn’t really compare the two – that it was better than fucking her pussy: it was tighter, and warmer, sometimes drier which felt good due to the friction. In his adolescent mind this last fact made sense because Wyoming in the winter was a slaughterhouse, the long sleep of a paranoid killer setting traps and hunting his neighbors, which translated to harsh people not caring for indulgences.
In any case, a healthy fifteen-year-old boy was going to nauseously imagine it, there was no helping it. He’d close his eyes, curious, one hand laying on his navel, and he’d see Jack’s penis – he’d call it penis, because cock felt too intimate, too daring – sink into a furled hole, an anonymous crevice, that was soft and hot but dry.
He’d pull on his own cock, and he would come quickly and silently, washing his hands in the sink – he’d only masturbate in the bathroom, thinking about Jack and his size; Mary wasn’t much taller than a thirteen-year-old. At the time he and Marge were threading a careful tapestry of cheek-kisses and hand-holding, going to the pictures when he could scrounge up enough for two tickets, studying together – Marge wanted to be a stenographer – and the farthest his imagination could go was a washed out photograph of her at a dance hall, skirt riding up her legs. He couldn’t do it. Marge was his friend, first of all. And if he’d had to be honest with himself, Mary – to whom he’d had no ties with – also wasn’t featured in those shameful private moments.
It was Jack, tall and broad. It was Jack and his big hands, his skillful fingers, knowing what to touch and where to prod, and it was Gale, in the aftermath, thinking it couldn’t have felt all that great to the recipient, in the first place.
At thirty-three, the amount of times he’d breached himself open with his fingers were two. Once, after the first sordid retelling, and twice, after meeting Bucky at Randolph. He’d concluded that it wasn’t going to work, because he was a man, and getting filled was for women, who are small and soft and occasionally dry in the right places. And that for them it wouldn’t hurt, because they were made for that. And he feels vindicated for the briefest second, because it hurts for him, too, only not in the way he thought it would hurt.
It’s a gentle ache, in the realm of tender: a muscle resettling itself after being worked hard, but not too much, not enough to tear. It’s sharp, as Bucky’s cock is big, long, big like he is big, fat like he is fat, slightly curved and sweet, Gale laughs, insanely, a sweet cock for a sweet man.
“What’s so funny?” Bucky says, as Gale’s snickering turns into giggling turns into smothering sobs, “Gale?”
“It doesn’t really hurt,” Gale replies, admits, not in the way it should.
“I’d hoped so,” Bucky is carefully maneuvering the both of them over the small, creaky bed of his motel room, “Are you…”
He doesn’t finish his sentence, but he stops moving; he’s laid Gale on his back, and he on his side, superimposed over Gale’s front, a searing, naked weight squelching his nerves, thumbs obscenely stroking over Gale’s hipbones, calf slithering up and down Gale’s leg. A sickly wave of goosebumps rose to forbear a prickling bout of stomach-churning and regretting. A week ago he should’ve been saying yes in front of twenty people and an altar. Instead, he got bent over, he was opened, touched, kissed, one hand at his nape and the other grabbing his waist, then pushing down, weeping and bleeding and for an awful moment he’d thought shitting as well but his stomach had been too empty for it to be a real threat, and the worst part of it all is that it felt good. Of course it feels good, Bucky gave it to him.
“I’m fine.”
“OK.”
“I am.”
“I said OK, Buck.”
“I thought– it doesn’t matter, anyhow.”
The windows are juddering as the trucks start their pilgrimage to the highways, and Bucky sights, shifting once more, sagging into the mattress. Stomach to stomach, dropping his head next to Gale’s on the pillow, he’s melting like a dense wax spreading over his whole body and he smells like Red Lucky Strikes, the pungent odour of sex – sweat and semen. Gale, hesitantly, brings his hands over John’s back, the texture of his skin uneven. He closes his eyes.
John says: “Tomorrow I’ll make you eat ten flapjacks for breakfast.”
Gale shakes his head, he’s always being spared by John’s mercy.
“Dream bigger, Bucky.”
“Twenty, then,” he murmurs, “drowned in syrup.”
“If you don’t suffocate me first,” he says, stunned, sleepy, silent for once.
“Buck,” and he's serious again, now, he's not joking anymore, “What the hell?”
“It's– I've got it under control. Let me go, Bucky.”

A few days ago I saw a funny post about how silly it is to think that a found-family dynamic cannot turn into something romantic as it's considered incestuous & someone reblogging with the addendum of how 'problematic' marriage is because it turns two people into relatives which is obviously an absurdist way of showcasing a logical fallacy but it also made me think about family (obviously....) because in post-carolingian France such a statement wouldn't have been too ridiculous or unreasonable.
In a letter to the archbishop of Strasbourg, Rabanus Maurus is asked to help provide the right punishment for a man incestuosi et parricidae. The question is not abnormal, but the case presented to Rabanus Maurus is puzzling to Us, because by our contemporary standards the perpetrator would not be considered incestuous.
Et quia idem homo, ut dixistis, homicidium, immo parricidium, super incestum perpetratum commisit, et ipsam mulierem, cum qua mechatus est, interfecit, ipsiusque virum, hoc est consenguineum suum, similer vita privati [...]
And because the same man, as you said, committed a murder, nay a parricide, in addition to the perpetrated incest, and he killed the same woman, with whom he committed adultery, and similarly he deprived of life her husband, that was his relative [...]
- Hrabani (Mauri) abbatis Fuldensis et archiepiscopi Moguntiacensis epistolae, ed Dümmler in MGH Epistolae aevi Karolini, III, n. 53, a. 847-856, pp. 507-508 (trans. mine)
Rabanus then goes on to say that he should be a life-long penitent, but what's peculiar is that the killer is considered incestuous because he's had sexual relations with the wife (to whom he was not related by blood) of one of his blood-relatives. In the historical context this makes sense because of the politics of the time (it also sits within a larger tradition of fathers of the church trying to stabilise their roles within the imperial territories) & it reveals many anxieties around family & women as well, but it's also interesting to me on a comparative level because it allows us to see just how much the perception of what constitutes a breaking of a societal rule has changed throughout time.

Actually now I'm thinking about my Lost Empire → my unpublished fanfiction featuring Irma's realisation she is a lesbian & her pining for Cornelia that almost kills her (trying to invent hanahaki disease from first principles) that I wrote in a monella vagabonda notebook with trattopen markers during recess....
