the day kelsi nielsen's fingers could reach the keyboard of her family's piano, she'd been destined for a life in music. there wasn't a childhood's day when she wasn't practicing a melody, mainly out of her own enjoyment but her parents made sure was well trained. the love of playing made it easy for her to learn the instrument and her skills only grew at a rapid pace. her parents proclaimed kelsi 'a child prodigy' and expected a grand future from her since then. she'd only thought they were exaggerating.
kelsi was never much for talking. she couldn't get how everyone had no problem with socializing when the only thing that came out of it was stress. the only thing that could calm her down was playing a song on the piano, so she hid behind an instrument for most of her childhood. eventually she picked up many other instruments like the guitar, flute, and even the accordion. for a while playing music could excuse her introverted character but her parents could tell that wasn't all a child should do.
in order to appease their wishes, she joined drama club her freshman year of high school. the club and its instructor, ms. darbus certainly tried to get kelsi out of her shell but there wasn't much use in that so she stuck around for prop making, costume designing, and when it came time for the musicals, she was a very useful asset to the orchestra. by this time, kelsi had written her own songs and offered them to ms. darbus for any use in the school musicals. she almost stopped offering them until ms. darbus took on kelsi as the composer for her junior year's winter musical. from then on, she would help compose the next musicals after that and gained a group of friends she'd grown to love and help her become less shy. she couldn't have asked for a better way to spend her high school years.
the race to senior year was tough, her parents weren't as financially sound as they were when she was younger and when it came time to pick out schools to go to, the only choice she could see a future in was juilliard. it had been her and her parent's top pick for her since before the discussion of colleges even started. the school only had one scholarship to offer and between the cast of talent in that school, kelsi's hope that she would be picked was slowly dwindling. however, the hard work she put in the senior year musical had paid off, not only was she picked but her one her closest friend's had been picked too. it was looking like a happy ending for her, she figured once she got that scholarship, all of her problems would be solved. she'd be in a new town, full of hope for the future she'd dreamed of her whole life.
things didn't turn out exactly as they'd seemed. the classes were great and having ryan around helped a lot that first year but after that, financial struggles dampened her spirits. the first year full-ride scholarship helped out so much, but maintaining enough to be there was where the trouble came in. kelsi took up whatever jobs she could but with the time and effort getting to save up, her grades started to slip. it was like getting knocked into the real world, instead of the dream world she'd imagined. the excited child once full of promise and eager to get into the world was no longer there. she packed her things and settled back into echo isle, still holding onto that dream that she'll go back to finish what she started.
HCโs:
despite her accomplishments, kelsi still isn't convinced she's got what it takes to lead a successful life in music. grappling with her imposter syndrome, she's bravely taken on half the creation of a new musical with ryan evans.
to help her raise enough money to finish up her degree at juilliard, she's decided to work on creating songs for sharpay evans. the job pays decently so kelsi puts up with it but it does feel eerily similar to her high school days
soft spoken. like really soft spoken, you might have to ask her to repeat everything but louder, which she hates so she figures she might as well keep quiet.
thought she was into boys for a while, even mistaking a crush on troy bolton for feelings that she really had for gabriella montez. those feelings have gone away since then, cherishing their friendship more than anything and the two have remained close friends since high school.
in the midst of her college days, whenever she had the time, kelsi ended up writing up songs to a musical she'd thought up after watching a movie called dogfight. she hasn't continued it since she's arrived in town so the sheet music just sits in her room, waiting to be finished.
has picked up shifts at the lava springs country club as the piano player for the restaurant. her training taught her the classical pieces for the piano well but that didn't mean she loved playing them. mentally, they weren't much of a challenge and most of the time she just tried to keep herself awake in any way she could.
