As it turns out they aren't but tbh they might as well be. Man I get that leaving the house to go on a journey at 10 is normal in this world but why is your teenager(?) taking care of your 8 year old

Being a Clemont fan and seeing how much fanon just leaves Bonnie out of the equation is lowkey frustrating because she's sooo pivotal to his character just as much as he is to hers.

I cannot watch this show anymore without thinking about how these two soso obviously exhibit symptoms of parental neglect and it's especially obvious in the way they interact with each other or talk about each other. They both feel responsible for each other--you can see it in how they're comfortable being alone themselves but not if the other is alone.

Clemont, much like Brock, places his identity on being the Utility of the group with both his cooking and his inventions and beats himself up the most when his image as the responsible one is tarnished in any way. He's overly concerned with politeness but when he gets mad at someone he lashes out hard enough that everyone else in the group is like "whooaaa buddy dial it back a notch".

Bonnie has explicitly stated that she worries about Clemont being by himself and that she wants him to have a girlfriend because "she can't take care of him forever". Her obsession with finding a girlfriend for Clemont isn't about him "getting a girl because that's what makes you a Man" (which is the attitude their dad has about seeing him with Serena), it's because she has this very warped idea of what role a Woman is supposed to play bc "Clemont is taking care of me but he's clearly struggling too" + "dad isn't taking care of us" + "no mom to take care of us" = "if there was a Girl to take care of us this wouldn't be happening" (which furthermore cements her idea that she's responsible for Clemont). Hence why her choice of a bachelorette is so often either women with kids/little siblings or women much older than Clemont (to the point where a relationship would no longer be viable): these are people that are easy to project Motherhood fantasies onto.

I watch another 2-3 episodes and I have even more thoughts.

Hard as I've been on Meyer thus far I don't think it's plain negligence on his end (i.e. he's not like Brock's parents); as out-of-touch as he is with his kids there is a sense of mutual fondness, and he is genuinely proud of whatever accomplishments he does know about.

I think it's much more likely that his work was the cause: he's an independently employed mechanic as well as serving the role of Blaziken Mask (something that he hasn't told his kids about), sometimes even working late at night. There was probably a lot of "yeah I have to work late again, can you take care of dinner tonight" involved. There probably wasn't much anyone could do about it, but when you consider that he's a single father that's not a great situation for his kids to grow up in.

#on some level it probably could’ve been better for them if they were orphans #but i definitely agree about how integral each of them are to the other and how annoying it is watching people try to gloss over it #clemont would not be the way he is if he didn’t have to take care of bonnie #not some vague idea of a neglected younger sibling #Bonnie! and she wouldn’t be the way she is if her older brother wasn’t clemont #bonnie #clemont #kalos

Personally I think that battle sims like showdown would still be a thing in the pokemon world. Cuz like picture this: you are ten years old and the only Pokémon you have access to is the elderly family Sunflora. You love Sunny to death but also literally every media you consume involves Pokémon battles and champions and cool ass fights. Sunny is too old to fight and your neighbor’s Gothita is too young. One day on the playground your friend tells you about this cool website that lets you battle pokemon on the computer. Later that night you boot up the family computer and instantly realize that this website lets you play as GROUDON (!!!!). There’s no going back from there.

also i think in-universe it must suck to live in unova and genuinely care about pokémon’s rights causes bc of course you’re gonna get branded as an undercover team plasma member. like if you tell someone they should really spend more time with their pokémon in a safe place out of the ball or take it to the pokémon center when it’s hurt it’s gonna be like ‘team plasma rhetoric dogwhistle 🙄’. eventually you’re gonna get ‘team plasma was an inside job to make well meaning people look crazy’. those people are right but nobody knows it. public opinion is gonna ebb and flow between caring too much and caring too little in either direction for years. insufferable discourse
