Buy this comic as a print.
I really don't have anyone to show this to, so it's for Tumblr I guess!
I have a stupid spreadsheet which is a backlog of games/movies/shows/comics etc, with dates of when I finish them, and a bunch of other stuff. Absolutely pointless, probably bad for me, all round Terrible Idea.
And recently I added a new feature in - a pretend TV guide:
I'm nearly 40 and when I was young there was a thing called a "TV guide" which your mother would buy in the grocery store line and inside it was a display something like this that would show when shows would be on TV on different channels, so one chart per day.
Of course, being that that's a silly thing to reproduce in 2026, I'm not going to stick to the schedule, and I don't have more than one channel, instead I have the Vibe of a TV guide. Because that's the most important part. The nostalgia, without the downsides.
I build this list (With code not manually each time) by making a list of items, in this case it's 4 shows and 1 movie. Monday to Thursday get assigned a show, and Saturday gets assigned a movie. For all the other days it picks one of the shows from the other days of the week and puts (Repeat) on the end of them.
Then, using the date and a magic number and a MOD operation I do a sneaky trick to get a psuedo-random number - picking the broadcast time on the day. This is unnecessary, as I don't listen to it, but it's important for the "aesthetic" of a TV guide.
Then, I have a random list of other shows/movies, which has another pseudo random number generated that changes over when the week changes. Several of these random shows get put before and after each of the actual shows to watch on the day. The spreadsheet has simple formulas to work from there, adding in the times of the items to make a schedule of shows I am Not going to watch because they aren't the picked shows, but are there for set dressing. (I also remove the words Season X from them so it's less messy looking)
Then, by overlaying a bar chart over the top of it with some shading which is built to leave an empty space where the currently selected show is, it makes for a display that makes me happy to look at.
This method accidentally solves one of the problems with "backlog spreadsheets" - that pressure to have to finish things when it's on a queue. Instead now I have a manageable schedule, with only one episode a day (And not even every day - some days are "repeats")?
Not only is it no longer a scary task list it helps with something else: Do your days feel the same? Every day the same? Well when I was young it used to be thursday that I would come home and watch Stargate, or some kind of sci-fi. That was Stargate day. And now, my spreadsheet will generate me a schedule of TV, for me to watch an episode a week, so today being Wednesday it is Thunderbird's day (Which you can and should watch it is completely on youtube) - and now, in a small way, the days feel different to each other, and it's easier to keep track of time.
Besides that, having a spreadsheet to track a backlog is a terrible idea and Should Not Be Done.
Oblivious to the unforgiving judgments being passed on him every single day, local 2-year-old Caleb Gibson is completely unaware that he is the sole basis for six couples’ decisions not to have kids, sources said Friday. According to reports, the toddler has thus far failed to recognize that his temper tantrums and messy eating habits have motivated several of his mother’s friends, as well as a couple who were eating near Gibson’s family at a restaurant, to go their entire lives without ever raising children of their own.

Renpy is using AI to advertise their mobile app.
I heard that Renpy has a mobile app so I went to check it out. Only to find they are using AI images (several, more than the one shown) to advertise the app. I figure developers or just ppl who want to download it to know that… I have not seen anyone talk about this either?
I think this is a third party app, just at a glance it seems like a shady as hell app, by someone who can make renpy run on a tablet but can't get a real photo of it? I can't find reference to it on the renpy official page either. I would not download that app!
I checked the store, it's made by someone who made one thing with an appropriate name:
The app says it collects no data but you would have to give it access to your files to run the games, and everything connects to the internet, so better be safe and not even try this!

Was worried I was going down an unfortunate rabbit hole because I started getting the anti feminist/anti Jewish/anti Muslim sides of Tumblr, but then I remembered that solid month where Tumblr was recommending me pro anorexia blogs and realised no it's just that the website rolls a dice and randomly picks which fucked up thing it's going to show you and for how long and it has nothing to do with you at all
trans women should be able to gloat a little when their breasts get larger than those of their cis woman friend.
I suppose you could but I've more often observed the larger bust women saying "I wish I was smaller like you so I could wear the cuter bras!"

He's back.
So, I would first like to acknowledge that he drastically improved his own lighting in this video.
That's a beautiful upgrade. Though he could improve his subject separation by making the background a tad darker. And I might suggest moving that cabinet off center so it doesn't look like it is growing out of his shoulders. But I think he has his key light at a good distance and that edge light really adds dimension.
But the actual video was very frustrating and full of fundamental misunderstandings about how light works. Just like his last one.
I literally yelped at the screen at one point. I just couldn't keep that noise contained within my body.
He seems like he is genuinely trying to learn this. And he even mentions how difficult it is to get quality information. And that made me much more sympathetic because I had similar issues in my learning journey.
But he keeps confidently asserting that he has solved lighting for Hollywood. He claims that fresnel lights are some kind of forgotten knowledge and that filmmakers aren't aware of them anymore.
Every professional lighting person is well aware of fresnels and how to operate them.
There are just so many more modern options for lighting that fresnels have limited use cases. You've got grids and snoots and reflectors that are much easier to work with and don't require an entirely different light or a bulky, expensive attachment.
Fresnels are neat. They are basically efficient spotlights. Other light sources often wasted a lot of the light's energy by spilling it off to the sides. Fresnels concentrate the light's energy and focus it. They work well at long distances, which is why they are often used in lighthouses.
Fresnels let you create a tight, focused spotlight or you can expand that into a more fuzzy circle (a flood).
And you can fill a room with haze and get cool shafts of light.
But lights are now super efficient on their own and the need for fresnels has become very niche.
We now have projection lens attachments.
These adapt regular camera lenses and go on the front of a normal light and you can focus the beam, you can make it blurry, and you can insert internal "gobos" to create special effects.
Aside from being able to throw light a long distance with good intensity, this attachment does everything a fresnel does, along with a bunch of other creative options.
He also thinks fresnels are some secret to getting hard light and sharp shadows. But all you need to get hard light and sharp shadows is a small light source. A regular-ass house lightbulb can give you hard light and sharp shadows.
Remember... Big light = soft light. Small light = hard light.
Diffusion does not make a light soft. BIG diffusion makes light soft. Because it makes the light BIGGER.
The fresnel lens does not make the light hard. If you stood next to a lighthouse fresnel, it would illuminate you with soft light. Because its size at that distance is big.
He claims that hard light is better because some movies used to look like this.
Yes, this uses hard light. But the reason this looks so dramatic is actually the contrast. The hard light does provide great shadow density, but you also cannot forget this is black and white—which is perfectly suited to high contrast. But the main reason this photo looks cool is that the contrast is dimensional. The light is very close to her and so it has pleasing falloff into shadow.
But you can't always get lights super close to people. This kind of hard lighting is poorly suited for environments. When you have to light a room instead of a face, you have to put the lights farther away. And when you lose the contrast advantage of black and white, you get flat lighting that doesn't have much dimension.
I've been watching Columbo recently. It started in the 70s and almost exclusively used hard light.
That's what hard light looks like when you have to light an entire space from farther away.
Compare that to a more modern aesthetic where they use hard lights and soft lights and practical lights and they are able to shape the lighting design.
There is soft light on the characters but they have contrast and dimension. They use edge light for good subject separation. And all of the practical light sources you can see are part of the design. They help light the environment.
Practical lights in Columbo had almost no effect on the scene. They were overpowered by the hard lighting. These lamps are not lighting Columbo at all.
Soft light can be dimensional and have good contrast. And it doesn't need black and white to help carry the aesthetic.
Again, soft light is not bad. Hard light is not better. Both can look amazing or bland. Artists need the time and resources to craft interesting, dimensional lighting design.
I love this because I saw the video in the recommended and knew I'd see this post soon

Lots of comments that are silly on this one, but to ACTUALLY solve this: until you tab off the field the form is not marked as 'touched' and when you tab off the field (also known as 'blur' event) the form is marked as touched and only then will the errors start showing on it and it's way nicer and won't shout at you after the first character is typed

Annoying Conversations (And other things I blame Generative AI for)
It was only a matter of time until I made a video on the subject
But it's made for people who already hate it and are sick of it so we can commiserate, not to convince anyone of anything. I don't have any illusion that I'm charismatic enough to change anyone's mind on anything!
Hello, we’re big computer company. We are truly grateful for your support! Our latest update will add a giant shit in the middle of your screen. You cannot remove it.
There was a plot point in Deus ex human revolution where you have some glitches in your cybernetics and you can go and get a software update to patch it, but it only adds a backdoor into your system and makes things worse
That was from 2011, it's only gotten more realistic since then!!!
