Night is falling now. It’s the time of day when I realize that I’m not happy, that I still have a steep hill to climb, a world to conquer, another to create, a time when I doubt I’m capable of doing that, or even worthy to. Because there’s that as well, for several days now, but I haven’t told you. A doubt about myself, my work— a profound, insistent sense of doubt. That would be death, though. Never mind, other times will come—the sea through our windows again, the little waves of evening…I love you and admire you. See you soon, my dear heart, my love. I will be prompt, this time, and I’ll wait for you up in the sky. I hold you close with all my might.
Albert Camus to Maria Casarès, Mon Cher Amour, May 7, 1950 [#299]
