I don't know; I think we need to think about how we talk about practicality re: historical women's clothing
because one of the most common criticisms leveled at almost any mainstream western style for women pre-1920s is "it was impractical!!!!"
and like. okay. impractical for what though?
sure you can't like. I don't know. wrangle an escaped farm animal back into its pen in full Natural Form. but most women weren't doing that, any more than most of us are now, and the ones who were....wore Work Clothing during livestock-wrangling hours
had someone tell me the other day that you couldn't work a 9-5 job in Second Bustle dresses
you could go to the office in this. you could send memos to Janice in accounting in this. you could work many types of non-food retail in this. you could do several different types of museum jobs in this. you could be a dressmaker, miliner, seamstress, or lady journalist in this, at the time. you could be a doctor in this, although nowadays we know you shouldn't.
what do you MEAN you can't work a 9-5 in this? there are so so so many jobs, modern and otherwise, that could be done in exactly this outfit
I make most of my own clothing from patterns that usually date to like 1869 or 1879-82. long skirts and corsets and the whole shebang (well, okay, I do corset sometimes and bra sometimes, but I digress). my average day is walking to the train, taking the train to work, either sitting at a desk or walking around a museum for several hours, running errands, taking the train back, and walking home
dressing like a Victorian vampire countess is no impediment to my daily life whatsoever. and I average 2 miles of walking per day, so I'm MORE active than most of my fellow USAmericans on a daily basis
on the flipside. can you do aforementioned livestock-wrangling in modern fashion jeans? in trendy oversized tops? is the Clean Girl Aesthetic 100% practical and possible to maintain in all situations that could possibly arise?
what's that? it doesn't matter because you don't have to do those things in your clothing and you'd wear different clothing if you did?

The Closet Historian rants a little bit about this in her sleeve drafting video - about how she gets a lot of comments about how the fancy things she's sewing don't have a huge range of motion, and yeah it's true they don't, but if she's just going to wear them to dinner or an art museum then why does it matter if she can't do gymnastics in them?
(Also I have had people say similar things about 18th century menswear, though to a much lesser extent. The first one that comes to mind is my mother going "ooh of course you'd need servants to do everything for you" in reference to my big puffy shirt sleeves. Which is very demonstrably nonsense as there are tons of depictions of people with big shirt or shift sleeves doing work, and everyone would be wearing them including servants because they were just normal underwear. And some people will just assume that anyone wearing any silk at all must be super rich and couldn't possibly have any work to do. because every historical job ever including the indoor ones must involve large amounts of dirt? I guess?)
We also forget that there are skills associated with wearing clothing.
If you watch older movies / TV, you see a lot of men wearing suits who unbutton their suit coat when they sit down and rebutton it when they stand up. Most of them do it without appearing to notice. As someone who never wears a suit coat, I don't know if I would think to do this. Does that make suits impractical?
As someone who wears long-sleeved shirts in winter, I automatically shove my sleeves up to do wet or messy tasks with my hands and pull them back down afterward. Would someone who never wears long-sleeved shirts think to do that? Would the resulting wet / grubby hems show that long-sleeved shirts are impractical?
Someone who is used to wearing a long skirt will treat it differently when going up stairs, either by lifting the front hem or by moving their legs around differently on each step. I know that this is a learned skill because I remember learning it as a child. Does an inexperienced wearer tripping on their hem mean that skirts are impractical?
It is awkward to put on or remove a winter coat while wearing mittens. Most people who wear these things regularly handle them in the right order without thinking. Does someone getting stuck in their sleeves mean winter clothing is impractical?
The average modern person would have trouble moving through life in a corset and layers of petticoats because we haven't developed the necessary skills, not because the clothes are inherently impossible to move in.

Here's another thing I think about a lot, especially in regards to redemption arcs: When God made us good, I believe He did so in a wide variety of ways. He is a very creative creator. And while Original Sin has been largely unoriginal ever since (as we fall into a dreadful yet short and predictable list of vices), the virtues of the redeemed and renewed are many. “How monotonously alike all the great tyrants and conquerors have been; how gloriously different are the saints" as Lewis (you will suffer him) said! Sin is reductive. Christ died to give us life more abundant. So, I tend to look at redemption arcs as opportunities for characters to become more, not less, themselves. Weed out sin, and they will grow, and that growth will flower into positive change. But their unique, God-given traits will remain—healthily instead of unhealthily expressed. For example, Lizzy Bennet, observant and witty to a fault (jumping to conclusions and judgments) doesn't grow by tossing her powers of perception to the wayside. Rather she extends them to the point of self-examination, self-awareness, and the humility thereof, so that by factoring her own limitations into her calculations, she gets better at coming to the right conclusions. That's why we love and relate to her, cheer for her and cringe along with her as she realizes her mistakes. That's the stuff of character progression.

How do you feel about Americans?
Americans have one of the highest obesity rates in the world, yet they hold the most Olympic medals. They have a horrible education system, yet eclipse the rest of the world in scientific research. The country is filled with clueless philistines, yet their culture permeates every society, in some way, across the planet. The country is still less than three centuries old, but has spent most of it at war. They are universally hated or feared by nearly every other country on the planet, yet the first to offer help during a disaster. Their people are stubborn and never content with the way things are, and for better or worse, all of them imagine how things could be better. Every American is a bankrupt billionaire, a prince in exile, a grounded astronaut, a disgraced scientist. There are the people who do not settle for who they are, but for what they may become.
The country has her problems. Certainly their government has a lot of blood on its hands. But there is something charming about the people I can’t quite place. Even the delusional leftists or the out of touch neocons. There is a certain magic about the place that you don’t find elsewhere. There are bad parts and bad people, to be sure, but there are just as many good parts and good people. It is a land of extremes. But even the poor aren’t really that poor. Much better to be a homeless American living on the beach than literally freezing to death at a metro station in Moscow.
Sure, Yanks say some stupid things. Sometimes they do stupid things like arm terrorist groups they later go to war with. But sometimes they also say profound things. Sometimes they do profound things like planting their flag, in person, on the moon. I can’t stay mad at them and I can’t help but love them.
