Mary Cassatt at the Louvre

This is one of the most famous paintings by Mary Cassatt - with a messy yet actually quite revealing history of titles.

It was painted around 1905, when she was still living in France, and back then went into catalogues simply as Le Miroir (despite the fact that there are two different mirrors here).

An alternative title was La Femme au tournesol (Woman with a Sunflower); in Europe it could have been read through the sunflower’s association with the Aesthetic Movement: Oscar Wilde’s 'art for art’s sake' etc.

However, Cassatt was American, and in the US the sunflower had also been historically treated as a symbol of the suffrage movement. Cassatt herself was strongly pro-suffrage.

In 1915 she donated the painting to an exhibition that raised money for the Woman Suffrage Campaign Fund - and yet, amusingly, in the catalogue of this exhibition the painting was given the rather oxytocin-inducing title Mother and Daughter; later it became known under the more general title Mother and Child.

When the painting was acquired by the National Gallery of Art in 1953, it entered the collection under the merely descriptive title Mother Wearing a Sunflower on Her Dress, awkwardly blending two narratives.

In 2019, the NGA changed the title to Woman with a Sunflower - less prescriptive about the relationship between the two figures, and closer to the earlier French title. Unfortunately, it misses any mention of the mirror (or mirrors, even):
