my hottest take is that I truly think every person should get emotionally invested in at least one local sports team - any team, any sport; chose based on their colors or if you like high-scoring or low-scoring games or which player you think is hottest - and go to at least one (1) live game each year; and at that game you need to cheer and/or boo at the top of your lungs with everyone else, and thus microdose on the human instincts for 'us vs them' thinking, mob mentality, and bloodlust. Because if you don't accept these things in yourself and periodically indulge them in something petty like sports, you'll accidentally put them in politics, fandom shipping, etc. instead, which I think we can all agree is Worse.
I was not ready for Shards of Honor
So I recently devoured Lois McMaster Bujold's world of the five gods fantasy stuff and decided to start in on the Vorkosigan Saga. I was absolutely NOT READY for the hot mess (affectionate) that is Shards of Honor.
First bit is a beautifully crafted space adventure novella with compelling characters and everything you want it to have.
Ohhh but we're not done yet! Now it's time for a high drama pulp sci-fi thing featuring WAR and PLOTS and BONDAGE and MURDER and COMPLICATED POISONS and SINISTER FACES GLIMPSED IN THE MIRROR.
And then we're back planetside, but it's a dystopian psychological trap thing somewhere on the timeline between 1984 and late-series Hunger Games. Lordt!
But we get out of that and run to... political intrigue and love and a gentle atmospheric spiritual ominous hopeful thing???
And the epilogue is its own short story that is both lovely and fucked up! What??
Lois McMaster Bujold, I love you so much but what is even happening here? I mean it's great but what are we doing?
What if I stayed up late too many nights in a row and woke up with horrible anxiety because of it so I took my anti-anxiety meds, which make me non-functionally drowsy, so I drank two cups of caffeinated tea, which is a lot for me, so I stayed up too lateâ
all through the morning mist I hear the small kingdoms breathing

Charlotte BrontĂŤ, Jane Eyre
I'm inclined to immediately disregard any criticism of dialogue in books that hinges on "people don't talk like that in real life." I'm a legal transcriptionist. In real life, people interrupt themselves constantly, repeat words and phrases 2-6 times, talk over the ends of each other's sentences, change their mind about a sentence halfway through, and punctuate every damn thing with "like," "I mean," "okay, so" and "you know."
and that's fine; that's not a bad way to speak. but it would be annoying as hell to read.
I also think itâs cool when writers use actual speech selectively, for specific characters, to convey something about them. Maybe one character saying âlikeâ a lot emphasizes how young they are compared to other characters, and maybe another one says âumâ and âI meanâ because theyâre uncertain, insecure, nervous.
Thereâs at least one author Iâve read (I think Dorothy L Sayers??) who uses real life rambling very effectively to show that a character is a super social chatterbox, dominating every conversation theyâre in, and yet maybe a little unobservant because theyâre constantly talking about themself. Itâs a really good use of natural interruptions, backtracks, and tangents to show character
there is no greater joy on this earth than Making Lists, Categorizing, & Sorting
oh do I have the game for you
I could . not. put. this down for 48 hours - stayed up too late, had weird dreams about it, woke up early, and played it while I was supposed to be doing other things. the last several dozen items took a lot of googling, which I do not even begrudge it.
and then. My partner started it. And the SAME THING happened to him.
surprisingly compelling. start when you have free time. like, yanno, a snow day.
oh my god, if you are the kind of person who gets sucked into logic puzzles, do not click that link if you have to do anything/go to sleep in the next couple hours
I was disappointed there weren't more levels, so I made them! The creator's code was under CC Share Alike, so I moved a copy to my website, rustled up 40 new categories, and added buttons so you can generate smaller puzzles!
Check it out! More levels!

Reasons Iâm grateful I donât live in New York City:
It really does smell bad, all the time. A sort of miasma of piss, smoke, and garbage
Not many trees, not many parks, at least not that I saw. A brick plaza covered with tables and framed by five trees does not count as a park
It justâŚlooks ugly. The buildings are just dingy brick walls covered in fire escapes. This isnât about age or upkeep of the buildings, this is about architecture and human overcrowding. What if the entire world was brown and blocked the sun.
Itâs a heat sink like fuck. Hottest 63 degree day I think Iâve ever felt
Cyclists are nuts. Theyâre flying in all directions at all times, ignoring all traffic laws and oncoming cars, weaving haphazardly through pedestrians, not one of them wearing a helmet. On another level
Restaurants donât want you to sit. Not âthereâs limited space in this tiny shop,â but âwe could 100% have chairs, we just donât want you to spend time hereâ
Unfriendly, grim, dirty, noisy, crowded hellhole
Oh, but one thing I will give it: the trains. THE FUCKING TRAINS.
They ran frequently, and efficiently, and were ironically the cleanest part of the city. They were easy to figure out as a visitor, and there are so many lines. I only heard it screeched like a damned soul once.

If you live in the UK you need to see this
Protect Internet Freedom from now until forever. It's important existentially! Americans stand with UK citizens in our struggle against government censorship
We are consulting on further measures to prepare children for the future in an age of rapid technological change. This includes potential ag

If you live in the UK, please be sure to take part in this!
I donât do politics on my tumblr. I try and keep it a stress free zone (believe me I worry about it plenty, thatâs the point of needing a place to switch off). But I just spent two and a half hours filling out that questionnaire and now Iâm leaving a comment not in the tags, but where people will actually see it (and I hate drawing attention to myself) because this is important.
The governments agenda is clearly spelled out in this consultation, through the phrasing of the questions.
Excuse me while I link a video. Itâs a clip from a comedy so itâs a bit exaggerated but it demonstrates the point very well.
Almost all the questions in that survey were âleading questionsâ. They had an inherent presumption that the person answering agreed with age restrictions, wanted more severe ones and wanted more websites and services restricted. (Believe me I take no pleasure in being correct that VPNâs are next on their target list).
This is a consultation where they try and make you look a monster for saying no. They push the âbut itâs for the childrenâ hard. Like there was one question where in order to say no, you had to not object to children sending/receiving nudes which felt wrong. I mean thatâs bad, obviously thatâs bad. But the answer isnât total lockdown of the internet to verified ID.
So yeah if you are from the UK then fill this out, and fill it out carefully. Donât let them manipulate or trick you into agreeing that mandated age restrictions are necessary, as that is what we have with this âyou must prove your identityâ and it looks like they want to make it worse, not roll it back.
Also section 4 I think it was, is skewed in the opposite direction as it wants to know the benefits of AI chatbot usage for kids⌠so slam that part too. Say no to AI and no to age verification.
When I filled this out, I focused my answers to all of these questions on *education*. Educate kids and parents in school and at home how to recognise dangers online: Common recognisable scams, links that may contain viruses, etc. Teach them about privacy online: Not giving your name, age, or location to strangers on the internet, INCLUDING THIRD PARTY DATA HARVESTING. That we need more protections around websites trying to gain consent to take our data. I pushed how facial and biometric data gathering is synonymous with this. And pointed out all the existing data breaches, and how THAT puts our kids in MORE danger. My response was the same for the AI questions. I made my answers focus on education. On how AI is doing negative things with the environment and water supplies, how AI is taking our data from those data breaches and using them for identity theft, and other crimes. etc. All my focus went into IGNORING THE LEADING QUESTIONS THAT WANT YOU TO AGREE WITH THEM And putting all my focus into PROVIDING EDUCATION, OTHER OPTIONS, METHODS THAT ALREADY HAVE HISTORICALLY WORKED, AWARENESS AND SAFETY CAMPAIGNS. Put the onus on learning self responsibility, and providing open access resources on internet safety education. You don't need to answer THEIR biasedly led questions. You can answer the question with the problems THEY are causing, and the solutions for a better path forward. Importantly though. Don't be rude, or swear. Or they'll likely dismiss your responses. Be thorough. Be smart. It takes forever to fill that form out, but it can be done in a way that circumvents their bullshit.
no leaves, but plenty of eyes.
inspired by me spacing out on a long drive & staring at trees. this happened earlier this year, and birches ended up growing leaves before i finished the doll.
all branches & roots are made of metal wire + hot glue, which makes them poseable and also keeps them from snapping.

A great day so far:
Made cheesy grits for breakfast and ate them on the couch while watching pleasant YouTube videos
Listened to some new-to-me music while doing crossword puzzles and finally starting my dreaded shorts alteration project
Had lunch on the deck!
Went to the little shopping plaza to pick up a record (success) and a planner (alas-the cute stationery store has succumbed to the lure of specializing in funky stickers and they donât have a great selection of notebooks anymore), and while I was there impulse-bought a belt
Stopped in at a friendâs house for jigsaw puzzles and chatting
Learned that Iâll be out of the house when my new roommate stops by for Moving in Some Stuff Part 1, which is good because I donât have any more human interaction in me for the day
Went to check out a new park, where Iâm currently basking under a tree and eating a granola bar while train spotting
I have high hopes for my evening, which will probably include another local park, some reading, journaling, making dinner, perhaps a dash of letter writing, and talking to my parents
