The suburbs dream of violence. Asleep in their drowsy villas, sheltered by benevolent shopping malls, they wait patiently for the nightmares that will wake them into a more passionate world.
—J.G. Ballard, Kingdom Come
"From these made-up horrors, these fictionalized enemies, he had created a villain worthy of the violent bravado that he imagined he would display if confronted by said villain. This web of racist lies was what he needed to make himself seem like a man. He invented a story about bad guys who were out to get him, and he repeated it to himself and others until he believed it. Then he made up another story- of himself as hero, defending himself and his family against this violent threat- and he repeated that one until he believed it too. Brian wrote himself into his own American westen, a world of cowboys and Indians, cops and robbers. And for a man with no job, few friends, and a family that couldn't stand him, pretending to be a main character in violent American mythology was as close to belonging as he was ever going to get."
Mediocre, Ijeoma Oluo
It's always "stop harming yourself or we'll have to lock you up!!!" and never "what do you need to change to want to harm yourself less and how can we help you make some of these changes?" and that's why we're not getting anywhere

I don’t think people realize what keeping the internet running and producing most tech they use entails like. Physically, labor-wise, energy-wise.
Purposefully included some older articles here so people can see how baked in this is:
Labor Conditions of Content Moderators (2021)
Inside AOL's "Cyber-Sweatshop" (1999)
Digital Labor and Imperialism (2016)
Amazon Mechanical Turk: The Digital Sweatshop (2012)
Gig Economy, Algorithmic Control, and Migrant Labor (2022)
The Rise of Cyber-Coolies (2003)
Ecological Impact of Computation and the Cloud (2022)
The Environmental Sustainability of Digital Content Consumption (2024)
Carbon Footprint of the Internet (2010)
I think a lot of times I see people talk about this stuff in relation to AI. It's right to talk about it, but I hate when people act like AI is the only tech that has these problems. What you see with AI now is a reflection of the broader tech and internet industry that has grown for the past 20-30 years.
you have to consciously unlearn racism and continue to watch for it because it will come out without realizing. because so much of society is structured around it. shrugging and going "i dont care" or "i dont know how else to say it" means you are okay with being racist and hurting other people with how much you dont give a shit about them.
Is anyone else starting to feel kind of wary about the increasingly common narrative that "women's bodies are so different to men's that modern scientific recommendations do not apply to them"?
Like. There is a significant gap between 'a lot of studies do not take into account variations caused by things like female hormone cycles, which can limit how generalisable they are' and 'medical science does not apply to women', and the latter just seems to create a situation rife for bad faith actors and snake oil salesmen to reassure you that actually, THEY have the answers, because THEY listen to women, and if you simply pay them for their online subscription service-
I do think the post that's like "when they torture you to insanity and then torture you for being insane 😂🤣" is one of the most succinct and foundational analyses of interpersonal violence and conflict that had ever been written
people on tumblr engage in virtue signaling just as much as anyone else, except they signal their coolness to the in-group by posting about bodily hair, sexual desire toward fat people, and social progressivism (the meaning of which depends entirely on posts, with no coda or manifesto to follow) all whilst still engaging in a variety of racist and regressive microaggressions, especially toward black and chinese people. this is because this website is overwhelmingly white, i have to assume.

Now make your feminine lesbians dark skinned.
i've seen a couple of posts around it but i do think it's worth saying outright that it's a bit sad and disappointing that the lore of etho's base is inspired specifically by wall-e's portrayal of mobility chair users, something that's deeply mean-spirited and mocking towards fat and disabled people. i guess you just would've hoped that etho---especially as someone who's friends with scar who is himself a wheelchair user---would put some thought into why it's not great to associate lack of movement with laziness
these teenagers and their dog are trying ruin our money laundering business. no tony put the gun down were doing this the old fashioned way. were gonna dress up as monsters and scare them
I get that people write what they know about, but tbh I'm getting a little tired of reading a lot (whether it's published well known texts or online blogs) from mostly white people talking about and explaining some oppression or the other (different flavours of queer people, ND people, etc) and doing this very odd thing where either they don't conceive of racism as an issue that works in similar ways leading to exceptionalism (a la "this Only happens to us this is so wild and absurd, this group is especially treated this way" about stuff that absolutely also applies to racism) Or even worse they bring up race to explain this other oppression as an afterthought (a la "imagine if this was happening [but with race] you would implicitly understand it's wrong!" when the thing they mention very much happens for racist reasons and people get away with it and the victims are very much gaslit about it not being a race thing).
It's just a really insensitive way to approach talking about oppressive systems that give me the impression this person hasn't cared enough to think a little more about how that comes off, what other kind of people are affected by this issue they think is exceptional, and most egregiously how it might come off when they imply racism is easily acknowledged as an issue and all but moving towards a solution - before putting that thought out there. On a blog it's still like, yeah, maybe you didn't think. But in published books? I'm just less inclined to give it as much grace, sorry.
It's great that we're naming the systems of oppression that are disempowering us and theorising about them and bridging the gaps in popular understanding of them. I also think we could do better about how we're talking about (or forgetting to consider) racism and orientalism in all this.
