one thing that makes htagwm work in a way that house md doesn't for me is that though both shows revolve around the idea that people are always lying but geniuses can see through the lies and play 5d chess to get to the bottom of things, a pretty significant aspect of htagwm is that the exact truth doesn't matter - like logan says in succession, the past is all made up. what matters is to tell a convincing story. meanwhile in house md there is a correct answer, there is a singular unified disease that was already identified by science and that causes every symptom in a patient's body. not only is this more compelling to me from a personal point of view, it makes for better tv, imo

whenever i see statistics about how rape is mostly committed by people you know, i do wonder who counts as someone you know. i'm sure individual surveys have their own policies, but this cannot be standardized, right? is your friend's acquaintance that you brought home from the bar someone you know, is someone from a second tinder date someone you know, is a sex worker's client someone you know? are those surveys only counting "stranger pulls you off from the street without you ever having interacted with them or heard of them or known anyone in common or exchanged a singular word" as strangers? or is it that it's mostly committed by people in positions of power over you, but surely that would include men over women for example. or are we only counting individual positions of power, but that doesn't make much sense? i do feel like this classification has pretty far-reaching implications for how we think about the topic, but maybe this has been discussed extensively already and i just haven't seen it

also it would just be nice if people making movies about eating disorders knew anything about the mechanics of eating disorders instead of visiting whathappenswhenyourebulimic.com. you expect me to believe that this woman is puking so much that her stomach ruptured but she has in fact managed to keep it a secret from everyone in her life up to that point (but also she gets caught by two separate people within three days, somehow?), including a man she shares a house and a bed with? and then the day after her stomach ruptures she is walking around pretty much fine. a nurse looks at her with bleeding gums and low potassium levels and goes "sounds look you're bulimic and need help :(" instead of telling her to drink more water and get vitamins? the ed movie industrial complex rests soooooo much on the idea of the dramatic medical event, passing out, heart attack, bleeding everywhere, when it is much more common to develop chronic diseases that unfold over years but are not as cinematographic. i can go the rest of my life without seeing the 'anorexic passes out and gets taken to the hospital so that they realize this is serious' plot beat again

i know a lot of it is how intensely formulaic ed media is but watching maddies secret (2025) two weeks after watching thin (2005) was insaneeee. they actually copied several scenes shot for shot. being forced to eat a cupcake on your birthday at the center while everyone watches? the body dysmorphia outlines? the patients doing something against the rules and then being exposed in group therapy? one woman saying she acted alone and then being told that it's worse that she lied in order to cover for the others? it doesn't sound like much but together it's really puzzling
