and for AI-less Whumptober 4. Hiding an injury / betrayal / lying
Three of the little words Ethan just uttered impale him, lancing his heart all the way through, but Benji has little focus to spare on that now. He's furious, but more than that he's terrified. Ethan is drenched in his own blood, the dramatic wound at his side is threatening and deep, and will definitely kill him if he doesn't get medical attention soon. To top it off, there are gunman at their heels and many steps between them and their transport.
Benji replies, "Don’t try to distract me from my tirade! You are going to make this up to me later!"
Ethan breathes through the pain and says, "Yes, sir."
"Stop being agreeable and charming when I am fuming!" Benji snaps, but his ire cools into something more malleable when he catches the unmistakable fondness in Ethan's eyes.
That fondness is why Ethan makes stupid, altruistic moves like this one, opting to bleed out rather than put Benji at risk. He'd rather die before he'd see me hurt, Benji thinks and frowns.
It's a familiar refrain, a tune that's seemingly stuck in Ethan's head in an endless loop. It's a love Benji can't handle, fervent and unadulterated and so authentically Ethan that Benji can't hold onto this anger in the face of it.
As his fortitude wanes, Ethan grows heavier against his side, borrowing more of Benji’s strength as they walk.
“M’sorry, Benji,” Ethan whispers, and for an alarming moment Benji thinks he’s going to faint.
Benji digs his fingers into his unwounded side and tugs him closer.
"Just concentrate on staying conscious and putting one foot in front of the other," Benji says as he leads them onward. "I'll take care of the rest."
Releasing a pained sigh, Ethan nods, dropping his chin towards his chest. “Thank you,” he breathes, at once both grateful for Benji and vulnerable at his side.
A great swell of protectiveness rises up then envelops Benji whole. He feels a dizzying rush of tumultuous and overwhelming sentiment, and wonders briefly if this is how Ethan feels all the time.
Benji won’t let anything happen to Ethan. He’ll steer them clear, and once Ethan is sorted and out of danger, they are going to have a frank discussion about priorities and maybe one about love if Benji has the courage for it.
When hangman met rooster at top gun, they hit it off big time. Good flirting, hot chemistry, great sex. Then just like they started, they end abruptly. They tried to convince themselves it's for the best because truly there's tension but no communication.
While they're still together, they've to fill in forms about emergency contact and the like. Jake doesn't have anyone to put down. Usually he put his CO, he is about to do the same but he sees Bradley writing another number on the form. Jake asks whose number it is and Bradley says it's "no one anymore" and go to another room. Jake thinks it through, putting an unused number as emergency contact. It has it perks:
* he won't be anyone's burden because nobody gets a "your loved one is dead" call
* he doesn't have to change the forms with every new assignment.
In that moment, he doesn't see any inconvenience.
So he wrote down the same number he saw rooster used and doesn't think back on it. Not until he gets hurt during a bad landing. He loses consciousness and wakes up in a hospital bed. There's a man sitting in a chair by his bedside. A man Jake doesn't know. Weird. The stranger calls the nurses when he sees Jake's awake.
Apparently, Jake had to have surgery, been unconscious for two days but he's not at risk of dying and he'll go back in a cockpit in a few months, after some PT. He'll need a place on base while the PT and the doctor recommends he doesn't live alone until further notice and the man automatically offers Jake to stay at his and his husband's house.
The doc leaves them and the man presents himself as Pete. A Navy captain. He received a call about Jake's accident and when he learned nobody else was listed on Jake's list, he decided to come even though he doesn't know Jake. Pete advices Jake to not blinding follow a stranger home, to let at least one friend know where he'll be staying and all of that.
Jake looks at Pete, sees nothing but sincerity and care in Pete's eyes and accepts his offer. He texts Javy, gives him the address and full name of Pete before he leaves the hospital. He thinks the name Pete Mitchell rings a bell but he can't say where he heard it before. Then he gets to the house, he meets Admiral Kazansky and realizes he should've asked more questions. Seeing the admiral and the man together it's clear Pete Mitchell is better known as Captain Maverick Mitchell, the man breaking every rules he can since the 80's.
It's more than strange at first, but they insist on not formal greetings at home and for him to get comfortable. It's nice, he heals quickly under their wing and goes back to his assigned post.
(then he's sent back to top gun, is reunited with mav, jokes with him and it's all fun until he learns the man raised rooster, aka the one who got away, maybe the love of his life. And things are awkward again lol)
Oo this is good - because Maverick would never leave a kid who put a random number down alone in the hospital no matter who it was (also, imagine the panic that someone’s calling because something happened to Bradley - then the relief that a) he’ll be fine and b) it wasn’t BB, then the shame about feeling relief that it was someone else who was hurt).
Mav & Ice do ask, awkwardly, just why the hell it’s his number that Jake put down. But copying it off your ex because you didn’t think it would go anywhere is…maybe embarrassing. And even if he gave them a straight answer I could only see Mav & Ice exchanging a look, but they wouldn’t tell him. That’s Bradley’s business if he wants his colleagues to know who they are to each other. God knows Mav messed with his career enough, and won’t do it again.
But the whole of TGM…hoo boy. Rooster’s acting like Hangman shouldn’t trust Maverick, and is so out-of-character angry that he half believes him. Except that Mav is looking at Bradley with more hurt and sadness than anger, and can barely talk to Jake because he’s so preoccupied. Jake is bewildered, feeling a little abandoned, and when he saves their lives there’s a little selfish feeling of now they have to let me in.
I've been thinking about the "Ethan's understanding of self-care is very sketchy" theory
So, he will of course makes sure he eats enough food each day, and stays hydrated. And he doesn't push on for days and nights on end without sleep, he knows he needs sleep to keep functioning.
But he doesn't choose food based on flavours, or personal preferences (if he even has those, because these have been his habits for most of his life at this point). If he's actively on a mission it will be anything that has the right ratios of carbs, and proteins, and sugars etc; if he's on recon and doesn't want to stand out, he'll choose whatever most other people around him are eating so as to blend in and not make a fuss about ordering anything unique or obscure.
And then Benji will come along, and start insisting on taking Ethan out to places he's heard great things about. When Ethan looks to be paralysed by indecision because "oh this place is so small, and the tables are so separate and secluded from each other and I can't see what other people are getting. And I don't really know what looks good to me, and oh God Benji's staring at me. What do I pick??" Benji will just smile warmly, offer suggestions of things to try, or if Ethan still looks like a rabbit in the headlights he will just pick two very different dishes and offer to split them half and half so that Ethan can properly try both
Anyway, I've made myself kinda sad thinking about this so I felt I had to share
