Percy notices the second that Annabeth slides out of bed. It’s hard to not notice, really, when he’s been sleeping next to her for years. He’s fallen used to the way she breathes, the cute way she turns from one side to the other seemingly on the hour, so it leaves him feeling rather empty and cold as the floorboards creak under the weight of her feet.

He doesn’t follow her immediately, figuring that she’ll come back soon enough. It’s alarming how he can envision her without seeing her – her steps are more spaced apart, so he knows that she’s still half asleep, and he can hear the sniffles, the remnant of her nasty cold.

The noise stops, and that does bring him out of bed. His feet slide onto the floor, and chills run through his body at the contact. His footsteps are featherlight as he walks down the hallway and to the living room, where he fully expects to find his girlfriend.

Percy does find her there, and the sight makes him have to stop for a moment to collect the drops of his melting heart. Her back is to him, so she doesn’t move, but she’s sitting on the floor in front of the coffee table, a bowl in hands.

A whole buffet, really. She’s grabbed countless snacks and set them in front of her as she finishes off a bowl of ice cream. Percy thinks she’s reminiscent of a sneaky toddler right now with the fuzzy blanket that’s wrapped over her shoulders, and it forces him to stifle the smile across his face. He just watches her for a second as her fingers hover over the colorful wrappers, deciding what to open next. It’s a deserved snack in his opinion because she’s been sick for days and has also been struggling through finals.

Annabeth yawns, and that brings Percy’s attention back to the situation. He steps forward softly, leaning against the back ridge of the couch.

“Come back to bed,” he says softly, sliding his hands over her shoulders.

Character A and Character B broke up, but now they meet at a Christmas party,, percabeth, wrote this on my phone while walking so pls excuse the not exciting prompt for today lol

The second that Annabeth walks into the party, she knows exactly how this night is going to be because Percy Jackson is there, staring back at her.

It’s the first time she’s looked at him in what feels like eternity. The wound is forced back open as though she’s never healed. Maybe she hasn’t. She thought she did, but when she’s looking into the eyes of her ex, she can’t think straight.

All she can think about is how last Christmas, exactly one year ago, she was warm in his arms, and now she’s not. Now she’s surrounded by the overbearing cold, heart slowly morphing into ice, and there’s nothing she can do to stop it. At one point in time Percy could melt her with just one smile. Now all she sees is stone.

“What is he doing here?” Annabeth demands.

“I didn’t know he was coming,” Piper says. “I’m sorry.”

“You didn’t know?”

“I didn’t invite him, Annabeth. I swear.”

Her heart pounds because there is no escaping this. She is stuck in this moment, frozen in time. The spell only breaks when Percy pulls his eyes away from her, choosing to look down in his lap. There’s something different in him. Something she’s sure she caused that day she told him she couldn’t take it anymore. It had seemed like the right thing to do at the time, to release this beautiful boy who would do anything for her when she wasn’t willing to do the same. She’s starting to think it was a mistake. That the lost the one person who loved her more than anything, and it was her fault. The Percy that loved Christmas, that used to tug a Santa hat onto her head and kiss her, abandoning the sugar cookies on the counter, that when she was looking at the shining lights, he was looking at her.

“Come on,” Piper says. “It’s only one night.”

“One night,” she whispers, knowing well it’s not going to be a good one night.

Still, despite herself, she makes her way to the group of friends on the seats. The one seat available is the one next to him. She doesn’t want to take it, but she does. It feels like it’s going to be awkward, like the tension is going to persist, but then Piper’s laughing with Jason and Leo, and the attention is off of the two lovers who never were.

Annabeth’s staring off into space, trying desperately to keep the flush in her neck down, when Percy speaks.

“I can move,” he offers quietly. She turns her head to him, and he can’t look her in the eyes. “I don’t mind.”

“There’s nowhere to move.”

“I can switch with someone.”

Hi! My name’s A, and I’m eight years old. Well, my name isn’t actually A, but I don’t know you yet so I can’t tell you my real name. I don’t know your name, and you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.

I don’t know why I’m doing this whole pen pal thing. I just thought it would be fun, but I don’t really know what to expect either. I guess I should tell you a little bit about myself.

My favorite color is grey, like my eyes. I like to read a lot too. I don’t have many friends, but that’s just because I don’t like talking to people. They start to talk, and it makes me feel like I want to hit them, so I prefer to just be by myself. I wouldn’t mind being your friend, though. I don’t have to hear you talk.

Dear A,

I guess you can call me P then. I’m eight years old too, so that’s cool! We’re practically best friends already. I’m doing the pen pal thing because my teacher says I should practice writing. I’m not very good at writing, but I promiss prommis promise I’ll get better for you!

I like to swim. The water is cold where I live, but I still go in anyways. My mom says I’ll get hypothermia, but I do it anyways because it’s fun. I wonder if you like the water too? You’re crazy if you don’t, but it’s okay. I’ll be your friend anyways. I have one friend, but I don’t really like them very much. They’re mean to me a lot. You seem much nicer.

Hey, P! It’s been a couple of months since we spoke. I’ve missed my mystery-stranger-pen-pal-person. Hope you’re doing well.

Honestly, not much has happened with me. It’s the end of sixth grade, thank god. I actually hate all of my teachers. Especially the history one. i babysat the sweetest little girl who was in a hot pink wheelchair. it was almost brand new, and she was just so excited to finally have a good wheelchair!! the day i walked into the house after she’d gotten it, she wheeled over to me with the biggest smile and said “it doesn’t hurt my back anymore!!”

for her birthday, i got her a barbie doll who looked a lot like her (it was the one with vitiligo) and a little barbie wheelchair and a few other accessories because who doesn’t like accessories?

apparently she’d had a white doll for a while and of course loved her doll but when she saw not only the one with vitiligo but also the wheelchair? and she put that little doll into the wheelchair and pushed her around a bit on the table? she looked up at me and burst into tears, grinning from ear to ear, and murmured to me “she’s like me. i didn’t know there were ones like me” and lemme tell you i nearly broke down right then and there and i gave her the warmest smile and hug i could muster up and her parents called me a few months later (i’d stopped babysitting because they didn’t have money to pay and wouldn’t allow me to babysit for little/free like i offered because i knew they both were searching for jobs and couldn’t be around their kid much bc interviews) and they just thanked me, their daughter was “so happy to have a doll like her that she carried the barbie around with her all the time”. they hadn’t been able to afford the doll and were actually saving up for a wheelchair at least.

He was shot three times in the back entering his own home. The police are not going to get any better under Joe Biden, in fact, they will continue to get worse because there will be less media scrutiny. There is little to no media coverage of this story because of that very reason. We have to keep these stories in the public eye and continue to fight to defund the police just as hard in 2021.
