Hi this is Cross yet and again and yeah. Since we didn't hit our goal last time we're making a new post to update the situation so basically we managed to scrap by enough for our medical papers and stuff for the insurance via our mom's disability aid but now we're short on rent (which was due 2 days ago) and on money for literally anything else. Our mom's acount is currently in the negatives and we only have about 50€ in cash. Our mom managed to get a consultation for us with a doctor to really figure out what is wrong with us physically but because she could only find a private doctor (since all the ones at the hospital are booked for months) it will be quite expensive (yes she admitted it was maybe reckless to do this things considered but our physical issues have become so much worse lately that we need to do something about it). That plus rent, plus her eye injections and other necessities will end up very costly on us so please donate if you can we would really like it if we managed to get at least halfway to the goal before before the 25th, since that's when mom has to get her injection. There are many disabled artists and we have adapted our own ways of dealing with how we create. Fuck you, we have been doing this forever.

Vincent Van Gogh had temporal lobe epilepsy; Henri Matisse became a wheelchair user after surgery for cancer; Michelangelo had osteoarthritis, limiting mobility and causing pain in his hands and feet.

Paul Smith had a severe case of cerebral palsy and created art using typewriters.

Peter Longstaff has no arms due to Thalidomide, and paints with his feet.

Frida Kahlo not only had polio that disabled her as a child, but of course as we all know was injured in a bus accident at the age of 18, which caused her lifelong pain and medical problems.

Fuck, you want a personal annecdote? I knew a girl (we have lost touch since) who was paralysed from the neck down and she painted with her mouth and there are other artists who do so too! And with eye tracking technology I’m sure disabled artists will be getting more and more tools as the years pass. But we do NOT condone AI art. All that does is put us, real disabled artists, who exist and need support, out of jobs and commissions.

hi, another disabled person here for more personal anecdotes! here is an art piece i made entirely with my non dominant hand 1 week before my most recent shoulder surgery on that same arm. i also wear splint rings to keep my fingers from dislocating while painting (or playing bass guitar cause i do that too). i make most of my income off hand painted art despite having hand tremors, frequent wrist dislocations/subluxations, and migraines.

my friend and her wife also make their incomes off wig making, leatherwork, and digital collage prints. both have chronic pain as well.

Mine isn't as drastic (yet) but I've been having to wear wrist braces and finger splints since childhood off and on because using my hands in a repetitive motions causes them to be in pretty excruciating pain.

What is my art medium of choice? Knitting. You know, that thing where you have to do a repetitive motion over and over again. I hold my needles a bit strange, I knit through the pain, I sometimes have to give up working on it for weeks at a time. But I will not stop because it's what makes my heart sing.

Disabled artists don't need your pity, we've been getting by, doing what makes us happy despite the pain and hardships for thousands of years, probably longer, I bet there were neolithic disabled artists.

No actual real artist wants or uses AI, including disabled artists. AI is for losers who are scared of the extremely important phase in art where you suck and want to skip it by stealing and not even in a cool "I'm emulating your style because I wanna learn from it" way.

hi... i haven't made a major post in a long time, besides the one last year when i lost my job and for my partner's recent accident (waiting on legal stuff in order to update properly).

i know i ask for help a lot, but i definitely am going to need it in the upcoming weeks - i had to leave my job due to experiencing chronic migraines that made it impossible for me to function, and was promptly diagnosed with a chronic migraine disorder. this means i am at my rope's end and no longer will have steady income lest i get a different job or return to the one i had. thus, i'm going to apply for disability since i cannot do physical labor and WFH on a computer was a last resort for me - however, i still have rent & utilities to pay for, as well as groceries and upcoming appointments for both the dentist and doctors.

that being said, if you've anything to spare and feel kind enough to do so to offer any kind of support to me, i'd really appreciate it since it'll be a long time while i work to get disability, and hopefully can be approved for it. below are my payment links, and i've also linked a folder that goes to my toyhouse where i'm selling characters (and would prefer to earn any money that way). i don't have any goal, as it will take some time to work things out and get the care i need & approval for disability.

There's people in the notes talking about "not basing your worth off numbers", and like. that isn't what this post is about. It's not a threat, either, it's a comment on how this site works, at a mechanical level.

Likes are worthless. Let me say that again.

Likes. Are. Worthless.

They don't do anything. They're a bookmark. They were never part of how tumblr works - in the early days we didn't even have a like button, and the site still more or less acts as though we don't. They're personal bookmarks and the only people who "get" anything from them are you (you bookmark the post) and the OP (maybe a very slight serotonin boost), but they don't keep the post in circulation, they don't keep it alive.

Without reblogs, a post will be dead in the water within an hour. No matter how good it is, no matter how many hours of painstaking love and attention its creator put into it, it will be dead within an hour and never seen again. It gets pushed down the dashboard and nobody aside from the followers who were online when it was posted will see it. And there's a huge difference in engagement on posts that get even one lucky reblog from someone with wider reach - that one reblog shows your post to five, ten, fifteen other people, and if one of those people also reblogs it, and so on and so forth, that's how posts stay alive and in circulation. It's like a contagion, but we're sharing creativity instead of disease.

And that matters. That "lifespan" of the post matters, artists and writers give up on this site and go to sites where posts have longer lifespans because it sucks to spend hours of your life, maybe even days, to get two notes and some fucking pocket lint for your efforts. We create for ourselves, but we share because we want people to see it, because that engagement offers positive feedback and encouragement to continue. But more than that, if every post (whether art, fic, gifset, whatever) is dying within an hour or a day of being posted, that means it's not making it onto your dashboard. And if it's not on your dashboard, you won't see it. This kills the site, after a while. You stop seeing the posts, because nobody is putting them on your dashboard, because this site doesn't have an algorithm like twitter and insta's and it shouldn't, it's the last bastion of chronological timelines.

I was denied for disability again and have to appeal federally even though i have over ten disabilities including autism, spinal cord issues requiring several surgeries, and a speech/memory disorder and need YOUR help to stay alive for however long this appeal takes moodboard :o)
