I've been doing Madoka frame studies/redraws to practice a new lineart and coloring style. Specific frame under the cut.

Make them look up at you with their big watery eyes, tell you they're green, and ask them again to tell you they actually like it. They like you hurting them. They're just crying because they can't help it. They don't want to be anywhere else.

trade evolutions are fascinating. Only a few pokemon can retain the energy for evolution in such a way that it can be used upon a life path swap.

let me be clear, a trade evolution does NOT only encompass swapping a pokemon with another trainer, it has a lot more to it than that. Notably, another trainer doesnt need to be involved.

In a regular evolution, Pokemon get to a certain point and have enough energy compiled and stored, that the energy is put into an evolution, much like releasing a pressure valve. The longer you leave that energy to sit and accumulate unused, the more odd mutations start to happen in a pokemon, often however, it is unproblematic, and only results in unique growth habits. I have however seen Graveller with 20 arms, and Bulbasaur with bulbs so fat from holding energy that they need to be divided, all because the energy used for evolution has been either resisted by the individual (yep, a pokemon can choose not to evolve on its own terms, though it can be a battle of stamina to resist and some fail anyway), Or theyre helped by a trainer or some outside force to retain the energy and stay unevolved.

In the cases of trade evolution pokemon however, we see a unique trait that a lot of item evolution pokemon have, in that they dont have an upper floor for their stored energy. They can just keep stacking it away, and it tends not to be a problem for them at all, unless done far too quickly.

The thing that allows them to evolve in the end, is their own free will, and change. It is not the act of trading that is what causes these evolutions, it is the new path. The unknown as an individual steps into a whole new chapter of their life. Change comes, and they expend the stored energy to evolve into something that may aid them in their next big adventure. You could liken it to sending a child off to college, more often than not, theyre going to come back a new person in many ways.

It goes without saying, that you do NOT need another trainer to trigger a trade evolution, it simply is called that for ease. Trading one life for another is where the phenomenon happens the most, but in actuaity if you release a pokemon, and that pokemon also wants to go off and start its new journey, that too can spurr on their evolution. If they want to start a new life with a herd, or come live with you from the wilds, that is enough. It only needs to be a change so drastic and wanted, that required new adaptions.
