I underestimated how much meeting another Arabic-speaking Pathologic fan would ease articulating Classic Maria Kaina’s appeal; her archetype is so well-established in our poetry (+ succeeding artistic traditions, from pop music to cinema) that the language for her becomes that much more familiar and accessible 🤍 I can still do the same in English, but Arabic takes so few words and media references when you both recognize just the kind of girl she is in your own social environment
An American friend privately asked about this, so in case even one other person is interested…

I guess you have to admire the fucking balls some people in Pathologic have, telling Artemy to his face that they think Khatanghe are suspicious and awful. Like they HAVE to know right?
(sorry OP) Thing that makes me feel some type of way. Based on dialogue with Anna specifically, she doesn't seem to know that you're the son of Burakh or what that means, not until she's forced to know after making a deal with someone who she incorrectly thought was him.
This crops up a lot ... in one NPC encounter a man says "your kind." When Artemy gets hostile, the man is confused and says that he meant "doctors." And in general, there's a lot of random dialogue where NPCs seem to not think Artemy and Isidor are related. "We get a lot of workplace accidents. We need a doctor. At least if he's like old Burakh, God rest his soul."
I think this is because Artemy comes across as European to most townsfolk and what "passing privilege" gets him is people being more racist to his face and Artemy(/you) having to choose whether to assert himself as Kin or ignore it. Whether it's random crazy woman Anna Angel or his friends.
Where I think this is most interesting, personally, is in all of his dialogue with Vlad the Younger. He knows Artemy is Artemy and is Kin, and he says "your people" all the time, but Vlad is more than happy to explain to Artemy his own culture and, on his own convenience, views Artemy as European or Kin. When he's justifying his overseeing of the Kin, he says "Are they lying? Or could it be true? After all, you- your father was a steppe man," sort of stripping Artemy of the right of being the first person the Kin should talk to. But when Vlad is terrified and upset that he's killed everyone in the Termitary, he can vent this first to Artemy, and says, "But thank you for the rehearsal. I've looked one of you in the eyes now." Now, when Vlad is seeking some kind of absolution, he believes he can find it in Artemy who in this moment is Kin.
Devastating stuff.

americans be like dude learning to drive isnt that bad but they dont know youre in ireland sharing a lane with a horse who is a bad person. And the horse and the instructor are friends and he keeps dapping the horse up through the window. And the horse called you a bitch under his breath so quiet the driving instructor is trying to convince you that you must have misheard him but you didnt. and theres a roundabout coming up and the horse didnt indicate
I can no longer remember the title of the book it’s from, but here’s a quote that has remained trapped in my head for the last 8 years: “Driving in Ireland is dangerous because the roads are full of old farmers who’ve led good lives and are fairly sure they’ll get into heaven.”

bachelor in artemy's route in P2: the absolute worst. helps you with microscopy at one point. primarily just gets your name wrong, gets in the way and causes problems. absolute nuisance of a man
haruspex in bachelor route in P3: teaches kids behind the factory. works at the hospital every day. wanders around with bottles of sedative so intense that it would kill most men, that he makes himself from steppe herbs. hands you organs whenever you ask for them. never gets the sand pest and keeps his own people safe. knows more than you about literally everything. is better than you at literally everything. he's ripped. shredded, even. keeps killing people, but that's fine
