Alpha Woman Unable to Love

i love characters who are inauthentic. characters who have an ever-present mask on, who deflect everything with humor, who struggle so much with being serious and vulnerable. characters who always have a joke or a flirtation ready, anything to distract from what’s actually going on underneath. characters who only let their guard down around certain people that they trust to not immediately abandon or ridicule them. characters who always hide their true selves because they’re afraid their true self is not worthy or deserving of love. characters who are inauthentic because they don’t believe anyone would want to be around their authentic self.

Brendan Fraser was the perfect choice for Rick O'Connell because he did a fantastic job showing that Rick's emotions are genuine. Many actors would be like "he is cold and strong, he doesn't show feelings" and make the character too bland. I saw some old interviews of some journalists from the 90s expressing surprise that Rick showed vulnerability (fears etc) when The Mummy released. Also I loved how shy he was when he gives the archaeological kit to Evelyn, showing how much he cares about her. The director even said in The Mummy Returns that Rick's family is both his strength and his vulnerability. In the end of TMR, Rick wanted Evelyn to leave that place and stay safe with their family. He was ready to die for them. And in The Mummy he goes to Hamunaptra twice because of Evelyn (he didn't want to go back there). So it is consistent with his character to be affectionate, but he previously had no family to give all this love. He has many cool scenes but he is not some cold hero and act like any person who loves his family. I really love this character.
