Arthur C Clarke wrote the Space Odyssey sci-fi series (the movie is more well-known, but there were actually 4 books). The last book, 3001 The Final Odyssey, is famous for popularizing the concept that maybe you don’t need rockets to get to space–maybe you could use an elevator.

The first time I watched dsod I was like “oh, that’s a funny coincidence, it’s like 3001.” But I didn’t immediately think “oh, the writers must have intentionally lifted this plot point directly from a British sci-fi novel.”

But Arthur C Clarke’s other most famous book is called Childhood’s End. And the plot of Childhood’s End (as best as I remember it–I haven’t read it since I was like 14) is:

Earth is conquered by aliens. The aliens get rid of hunger and war, and at first it looks like they’ve turned the planet into a utopia. But then people realize that all the children on Earth are losing their emotions. At the end of the book, the children form a powerful psychic hivemind and ascend to a higher plane of existence. 

It’s revealed that the aliens, which no one had seen in-person until that point, look like devils. And the reason humans designed mythological devils the way they did is because humans all share a universal subconscious memory, spanning both the past and the future, and humanity subconsciously foresaw that the aliens would steal their children.

…and then everyone’s too sad to ever bone again, so the human race dies out.
