Whilst John, Frank and Howard Rimmer possibly weren’t loved by their cold father much more than Arnold was, they were probably able to form a brotherly bond - of sorts - which included teasing Arnold at every opportunity. They had support from each other. This means that not only was Rimmer without parental love, he was without brotherly love too, so it’s no wonder he turned out worse than they did. In that situation he would have struggled to understand love and affection at all. Lister IS the closest thing he’s ever had to that.
