I kind of think that Rimmer is unaware of his self loathing because he hates himself. Like if he knew that he was unhappy with how he acts or looks he might try and fix it and then other people would like him more. So he is willfully unaware because he hates himself and wants to suffer more.

and the world really truly was not ready for gwen cooper in 2006 like to me this is kind of the distinction between what happened with her and other classic examples of jaw dropping yaoi fan misogyny from the same era. like sherlock and supernatural 100% got the fanbases they deserved i'm sorry to say and that doesn't excuse the misogyny from the fans but it is true. but torchwood i think was genuinely wasted on misogynistic late 2000s/early 2010s m/m fans. god knows gwen was. and I'm not even gonna act like torchwood as a show loves women or anything bc god knows it has its own problems (though tbh in comparison to 99% of other Edgy 2000s Genre Shows it might as well be a feminist masterpiece. low bar though) but it did at least have interesting female lead characters. it just also had bisexual men and so accidentally attracted the worst type of people imaginable
