Ok so this is probably going to be an awkward LONG post that noone other than be cares about, but here is my attempt at making as much of ELO's Time about Red Dwarf as I can. Because I love both a lot and I can LMAO. Everyone listen to Time and watch Red Dwarf NOW for the best experience /lh
ALSO my non-serious disclaimer: I am unsurprisingly a MASSIVE fan of both, but this leads me to be super nitpicky about every comparison that I make. And obviously, due to the nature of Time being vague/ up to interpretation, I take a bit of creativity on how much I can stretch it to fit my points LOL
SOOO.. under the cut will be my song by song comparison list type thing :)) This may be INCREDIBLY niche/ require knowledge of both media to understand but honsestly I did this for my own gain LMAOO
Prologue
Obviously, as its so short and sets the tone, there's not much to say. I like to assume Prologue to BE equivalent to stasis (rather than it being Lister getting let out and realising what's happened) but that could just be because I like using lyrics from other songs to talk about his initial realisations. I do want to put specific notice on the lyrics "You feel so glad to be/ Unable to go beyond" though. Like if the protag of TIME sees 2095 as the end of time imagine how someone 3 million years on feels LMAO
Twilight
All of the references in Twilight to wanting to return INSTANTLY (I only meant to stay awhile; You brought me here, but can you take me back?) are easily compared to Lister believing he can get back in the early series and even though they don't directly link, it's easy to make the uncertainty from lyrics like "Am I awake or do I dream?/ The strangest pictures I have seen" could be used to reflect future echoes. (I also think at this point it's important for me to note that I do NOT view Time as being a dream. I do agree that the album is specifically structured to make it sound possible, but I can never get behind people that fully believe it. SORRY DREAM TRUTHERS)
I know I've also already mentioned it under Lister, but I also think you can do something pretty cool with "You brought me here, but can you take me back?/ Inside the image of your light/ That now is day and once was light" can also be used about Rimmer. How? I'm not sure. But I like it a lot.
Yours Truly, 2095
I find the general concept of this song pretty hard to try and link to anything in particular, as you never SEE Lister trying to communicate with the past or anything similar. The closest I can think of is his father's day messages in Fathers and Suns but that's a completely different tone so I think i have to discount it. However, it's SO easy to compare the protag's robot gf to Rimmer. Take "I met someone who looks a lot like you/ she does the things you do/ but she is an IMB" and compare it to "I still have the same drives, the same feelings, the same emotions, but I can't touch anything" and it's SO obvious. If you're willing to stretch lyrics like "She is the latest in technology/ Almost mythology" and any other lines about her being cool to Rimmer becoming hard-light, I think that's also very reasonable.
But again, like I said at the start I don't think this is a GOOD comparison in the way that I'm really picky. I don't argue that it works but I think YT,2095 is so clearly about how having a robot gf makes the protag miss Julie more, and Rimmer being a hologram doesn't exactly have the same effect on Lister.
Ticket to the Moon
The opening verse to this song is "Remember the good old 1980's/ When things were so uncomplicated/ I wish I could go back there again/ And everything could be the same" and I think that says enough emotion-wise.
However plot-wise, again, this song is super hard to link. I think you CAN kinda link it in the complete opposite though. The protag IS able to get a ticket to the moon, get away, do something he couldn't do before, whereas Lister can NEVER. He's stuck on Red Dwarf with no hope of change (all alone, more or less).
I do think the lyric "I paid the fare but what more can I say/ It's just one way" as the final line is good though. You can contrast it (especially in reference to Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers) to Lister only ever intending to get home, but the one way ticket being the START rather than a RESULT. (I don't think this was worded well but please see the vision)
The Way Life's Meant to Be
Plot wise, this is one of my two FAVOURITE songs on this album and I think it lends itself to Lister SO WELL. Unfortunately my favourite lyrics of any song ever are "As I gaze around at these strangers in town/ I guess the only stranger is me/ And I wonder, yes I wonder, is this/ The way life's meant to be" and that PERFECTLY shows why I don't think comparing Time to Red Dwarf is as straight forward as doing it for shows like Futurama, BECAUSE TIME HAS SUCH EMPASIS ON THE PROTAG NOT FITTING INTO A NEW SOCIETY. LISTER HAS NO SOCIETY LEFT. VERY DIFFERENT !!
Aside from that theme not being transferrable, the rest of the song links so well to Lister. Lyrics about being in the same location, but with noone he remembers work especially well: "The ground at my feet, maybe it's just the old street/ but everything that I know lies under" or reference to everything being artificial such as "With its ivory towers and its plastic flowers/ I was I was back in 1981" are so good for him.
Surprisingly, I haven't mentioned it under any other song yet, but if you make Kochanski equivalent to Julie, you get a very different effect with some lyrics if you imagine them being directed to her. A LOT of what the protag says refers to Julie still being alive, continuing her life without him, whereas Lister has ALWAYS known that Kochanski is dead.
This song in particular seems really disjointed so I apologise about that, but for this song in particular I have both SO much to say and also absolutely nothing at all LOL
Another Heart Breaks
… is an instrumental. And it's not as cool as the Red Dwarf intro from s3 onwards. What else do you want me to say?
On a more serious note, I think you can compare the nothingness of the song and the protags desperation to the lifestyle that the crew are forced into. There is NOTHING. Alternatively, it could reflect the gap between s8 and Back to Earth but most of my comparisons stick to the earlier series so I'm not sure.
Rain is Falling
Guys can I be honest and confess that this is possibly my least favourite song on the album and I think my comparison might unintentionally reflect that. SORRY.
Anyway, I think in general it's pretty hard to do anything here because the protag and his relationship with the new society is KEY but I think you can use "With their brand new time transporter/ They'll think maybe I fought to get away/ But with all their great inventions/ And all their good intentions, here I stay" to talk about how Red Dwarf's mission IS to return Lister to Earth. And how he is not and he never will. Also maybe an addition of how (aside for irl improvements in technology and sets etc.) the ship is NOT 3 million years advanced, tech wise. They are still using the best technology that they have but it is not enough. Just like the protag and his brand new time transporter.
From the End of the World
This song is practically BEGGING to be a s7e5: Blue edit. "I sent a dream to you last night/ From the end of the world" … ok Dave Lister. The whole premise of this song is just the protag trying dreaming about his lover who is in a different timeline. Even without my rose tinted rimster shipping glasses that's hard to ignore.
The Lights Go Down
Actually can I be honest and say I've got NOTHING for this one? Before I started writing I think I had something in mind about s7 Kochanski in reference to her Lister but I really don't know how it'd work. This is a prime example of me being too picky though because you could totally work with that LMAO

I think trying to link Here is the News to Red Dwarf is like trying to do it for Rain is Falling to be honest. Both are about society and that's something Red Dwarf CAN'T compare to. You could probably do something with the mail pods from Better Than Life or Dear Dave but it's not that interesting. Shame really because, audibly, it's one of the best songs on the album..
21st Century Man
Plot-wise, this is my other favourite song so I am very biased. I think almost every line of this song can so easily be in reference to Lister and that makes it so hard to pinpoint anything LMAO. If you want to take the book route though you could talk about the verse "You stepped out of a dream/ Believing everything was gone/ Return with what you've learned/ They'll kiss the ground you walk upon"… Like can you not make that about Lister spending half his life with the cockroaches on Earth in Better Than Life?
I also think the overall theme of the protag trying to accept life as a 21st century man, but not being able to truly immerse himself is so key. Lister never refers to himself as someone from 3 million years on (actually the opposite. He calls himself an "enlightened 23rd-century guy" in DNA) and that DOES shift the tone significantly
Hold On Tight
I think this song benefits from being the album's most popular and upbeat. It helps because Red Dwarf IS a comedy (no matter how much sad time displacement I talk about in it) and Hold On Tight links them nicely! Even if Rimmer is NOT comforting to Lister, his role is still to keep him sane, and I think that lends itself nicely to the verse "It's a long time to be gone/ Time just rolls on and on/ When you need a shoulder to cry on/ When you get so sick oof trying/ Hold on tight to your dream" (The dream, obviously, being Fiji).
I think that the constant reference to struggling links to the fact that you FREQUENTLY see that Lister struggles with being the last human (with Dear Dave in mind specifically here) but every mention of losing hope in Hold On Tight is paired with the need to continue thinking of your unrealistic dream. I don't have a good conclusion here, but you can see what I'm trying to say, right?
Epilogue
Like Prologue, there isn't too much to say here because of the length. But I think with the cyclical/ repetitive nature of it, you can compare it to Lister's "Holly, plot a course for Earth. The slime's coming home" from The End and Rimmer's "Kryten, plot a course for Red Dwarf. The slime's coming home" from The Beginning. AUGH THEY MAKE ME SICK
Honestly, I'd have LOVED to include the bonus tracks too, but I get so overexcited about them that I don't think I'd be able to formulate anything useful LMAO. Not to be a total beg but PLEASEEE let me know your thoughts on this because (like I've said a million times over) I'm SO passionate about both of them and I honestly just love reading what people say LOL

Thinking about how Rimmer is cowardly and traitorous and looks out for himself first but also if anyone is even a little nice to him ever he will sacrifice a lot for them.
His ‘best friend’ when he was a kid threw him in like a septic tank or something and he still refers to him as his best friend.
Lister is actually the worst roommate ever but as soon as he gets sick and passes out in the hallway he helps him.
He was all in to burn his stuff when they were on the ice moon cause lister burnt his guitar.
