Drozdzowki, or Polish cream cheese buns, are delicious pastries with a creamy filling inside of soft, fluffy dough. These are great as a sweet snack or for breakfast.
Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour. 1/4 cup granulated sugar. 1/2 tsp salt. 1 packet 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast. 1/2 cup warm milk. 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted. 1 large egg. 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened. 1/4 cup powdered sugar. 1 tsp vanilla extract. Powdered sugar for dusting.
Instructions: In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the mixture, let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size. Preheat your oven to 375F 190C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a separate bowl, mix together cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and flatten it into a small disc. Place a spoonful of the cream cheese mixture in the center of each disc. Fold the edges over to enclose the filling and form a bun. Place the filled buns on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown. Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
