And now, ladies and gentlemen, your April Foolâs Day anthem.
Can I watch a great film knowing the actresses in it were terrorized and mistreated the entire time? Can I watch a football game knowing that the players are getting brain injuries right before my eyes? Can I listen to my favorite albums anymore knowing that the singers were all beating their wives in between studio sessions? Can I eat at the new fancy taco place knowing when the building that used to be there got bulldozed eight families got kicked out of their homes so they could be replaced with condos and a chain restaurant? Can I wear the affordable clothes I bought downtown that were probably assembled in a sweatshop with child labor? Can I eat quinoa? Can I eat this burger? Can I drink this bottled water? Can I buy a car and drive to work because Iâm sick of taking an hour each way on the subway? Whose bones do I stand on? Whose bones am I standing on right now?Â
On one hand, itâs a privilege to be able to choose to acknowledge these horrors or notâweâre going to acknowledge that privilege. On the other hand, I once attended a lecture by the explorerer-conservationist Jacques-Yves Cousteauâs daughter and son and they had a lot of opinions about what we could do to help the environment and the ocean and I talked about how in my country, we have to drink bottled water, because itâs a desert and thereâs only salt water all around, but weâre contributing to pollution and all of these thingsâŚ
And she looked at me and told me not to fall into the trap of âactivist guilt.â I couldnât remember the exact words, but, it was the first time Iâd heard the term and it took a weight off my shoulders.
We do what we can. Itâs so much better than giving up entirely or not doing anything at all because we canât do it perfectly. It doesnât benefit anyone in the end if we just sit around feeling guilty about every little thing in life. Iâd just joined tumblr back then (haha, so like, eight or nine years ago at this point?), I was being exposed to way more than Iâd ever been before (I was previously just into feminism and animal rights/wildlife conservation/environmentalism since I was a kid), and it was weighing on me.
As long as humans are humans and living flawed lives, many consumed by greed, there will not be anything in this world untouched by evil.
I usually avoid stuff that says it was made in China or other cheap looking knockoffs, out of fear of them being made in sweatshops (now, I know even a lot of big brands use thoseâŚ), itâs exhausting. Then, I read something about how people who actually lived and worked in those would still buy this cheap stuff and how this shocked the foreigner reporting on it, but they just looked confused like, itâs what they can afford and them avoiding consuming it isnât going to change the whole system from the ground-up.
⌠it went on about how âmoney talksâ and choosing where to put your money still feeds the whole capitalist system and is nearly a way of comforting yourself, but you not buying doesnât mean everyone else isnât. What needs to be tackled is at a much higher level than any of us can reach.
Of course, Iâd still, given the choice, give my money to companies I agree with and Iâll boycott what I know to support awful stuff, but I also feel no superiority over this and know now itâs not as black and white or easy as I thought it was.
This is the same reason that moral purity âyou canât enjoy [x] because itâs Problematic â˘â is such nonsense, because nothing is pure. Thereâs something bad about everything if you dig deep enough. As long as we lived in flawed human societies weâve got to make the best of what they offer us. If you have the choice and means, please, do support those who do good, but also, donât beat yourself up over not living up to an unattainable ideal.
No one can. Youâll just make yourself so miserable, you either burn up and stop fighting entirely or youâll make yourself a non-productive, depressed heap just out of a bleeding heart left unchecked. You canât make a change to this world if you refuse to engage in it.
Have a related article with self-care tips for activists.
Purity is one of the worst, most harmful myths humans ever invented.

ya'know, maybe the reason rural, small-town people donât trust national media is because national news outlets pretty much ignore 85% of the country.
nebraska is literally flooded, at least one person has died and three are missing, 60 thousand have evacuated⌠and the first cnn article about this went up like ten minutes ago and only mentioned flooding around omaha.
like. iâm from omaha and iâm frustrated by the lack of attention the rest of our state is getting. someone died, and youâre not going to mention that? how was this not a story worth reporting this morning? are nebraskan farmers and small-town citizens not just as important as the californians displaced by wildfires, or southern/east coast people affected by hurricanes?
when we complain about nebraska being ignored, weâre not really talking about not having shows set in nebraska, as much as we might want that. weâre talking about this â thousands of people losing their homes, their livelihood, and yet no one seems to think itâs worth mentioning.
when hurricanes devastated the south last year, nebraskans donated what we could to help those affected. we sent trucks filled with donated items and coordinated with shelters and organizations to make sure we actually sent things that were needed. iâm just saying, it would be nice to see some of that support in turn. even if itâs just bringing attention to this.
At the very least you would think that the farmlands that feed most of the US being flooded would be important to someone other then us Nebraskans. But we are ignored. At best Omaha is briefly mentioned. At worst weâre ridiculed and looked down upon because weâre just some dumb hicks with a boring state and a laughing stalk of a football team.
Iâm terrified for my fellow Nebraskans because even us in the city donât have enough money to be the only ones who donate. This needs more recognition because more people will die because of exposure after the fact.

I live in Fremont Nebraska. We are literally a fucking island right now. There is no way in or out of town. Half our town is flooded and the water is still expecting to rise. Two of my friends have lost their homes and one lost pets.Â
The thing about the flooding is that the other half of Nebraska is experiencing blizzards. Our whole state is in anarchy right now. Thereâs no water left in fremont. Two of our leveys have broke and our dam is being held together through sheer fucking will. This is fucking terrifying okay? Even if me and my family wanted to leave we CANâT. If fremont getâs flooded anymore where are we going to evac to? We canât. We canât get out of town. Why has this not been a fucking emergency yet?
Currently my family is okay, but were close to losing our home too.Â
If you can spare anything please. PLEASE Donate. Nebraska is in need of a lot of help right nowâŚ
I live smack-dab in the middle of the state, four hours away from Omaha, and these are some pictures my friends and family have taken.
There are so many bridges out, so many roads impassable. Hundreds of people are stranded.
See this little island? Zoom in. Those are cows. Stranded, freezing, with no food, in the middle of calving season.
People have been losing 3 out of every 5 baby cows, because they are freezing in the mud before farmers and ranchers can even get to them.
This is my Uncleâs house, on the left
Itâs a two story, and that water is six feet below the roof. They have my grandparentâs camper parked next the the barn (on the right) and you canât even see it. My uncle has three young kids, the oldest of which has severe cerebral palsy, and now theyâre living out of a hotel. My aunt only had time to pack two suitcases for the five of them. They had to leave everything else.
Really you guys, Nebraska has been flooded before, we have tornadoes every year, our temperatures are just as extreme as Chicago or Phoenix - but this is so much worse than any of that. I know there are worse things going on in the world, but this is happening too, and itâs going to impact so much more than most people think it will. Nebraska is a huge supplier of beef, pork, corn, and soybeans. Just in my hometown we have a huge Tyson processing plant that is weeks behind in production because the trucks canât get through, and itâs costing a lot of people their jobs. This is serious.
Hey! My uncle lives here, and we only found out about this because he called to tell us heâd been allowed back. His car got swept away and his house is in a miserable stateâŚbut heâs back.

Pat: Hrnhh⌠Sounds expensiveâŚ
Brian: It is, Snake. And the cost disproportionately effects women.
Pat: Women
Brian: Societal norms in the west dictate that a womanâs value is tied to their appearance. And the thing every woman hasâŚ
Pat: SkinâŚ
Brian: Right.
Pat: So, we expect women to attain a higher â [clears his throat] we expect women to attain perfect skin, and we also expect them to pay for it.
Brian: All while paying them less for doing the same jobs as men.
Pat: So Colonel, that meansâŚ
Brian: Yes Snake, it is imperative that you give your money to women.
Pat: Right!

lemony snicket was really out there teaching us as elementary schoolers about grey morality, about how neither good nor bad people always get what they deserve, how being clever and kind doesnât always guarantee you will triumph (although itâs certainly better than the alternative), how ignorant/complacent/dismissive though well-meaning adults can have just as harmful an impact on children as those with ill intentions, and how not every story has a happy and complete ending

Remove the White Supremacists
Dear Tumblr @staff,Â
In light of the recent white supremacist terror attacks worldwide:Â
We, the Tumblr community (your community), implore you to change your previously passive policy against white supremacy and white nationalist extremist ideologies.Â
Every major news station, social expert, and experts on extremist ideologies have identified that these extremist ideologies are spread and grown on online platforms: specifically social platforms. They have identified the major ways that communities can confront these violent extremist views; the biggest one being for social media groups to actually start removing user accounts that post and spread extremist white nationalist dog whistles, memes, and rhetoric.
Your users are begging for your help in stemming the rising tide of xenophobic violence. As has become evident by the recent terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, these ideologies donât begin with violence, but with strategically spouted rhetoric and hate speech that riles up others who are vulnerable to being persuaded by their subtle methods.Â
Please. If you support the safety of your users. If you support the Muslim Community. If you support the Jewish Community. If you support People of Color. If you support your users regardless of color or religious background.Â
Then itâs time to start taking a proactive stance against extremist white supremacist and nationalist ideologies and remove them.Â
The signatures and reblogs below should serve to show you how strongly your userbase feels about this. We all stand for a world without Hate. Do you?
@staff do you hear us?

For some reason, after I updated my Photoshop earlier this week, I now get a message when I try to open up Photoshop that says âcould not initialize Photoshop because scratch disks are fullâ. I tried this one YT vid where it showed me how to fix it, but it didnât work. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this?Â
Update: So, with recommendations from tumblr peeps, I tried to look for photoshop temp files to delete, and I couldnât find any. I contacted someone from Microsoft and I got rid of almost all of my temp files, but Photoshop still wonât open 8( Â
Iâm going to attempt posting a question out on the Adobe site to see if anything might shakeÂ
Update pt. deux: still havenât made any headway via Adobe 8( All of this weirdness pretty much started because of that PS update @n@Â
(I might just purchase a storage chip, but if anyone has any tips on how to remove stuff on Local Disk Š, Iâd really appreciate it-I purchased this $6 a month thing from Microsoft to add more space, but still nothinâ o|-<)Â
EDIT: !!!!! Wait I just remembered! So last night, my Surface Go updated while it was shut down-if anyone knows if that might have to do with anything, Iâd definitely appreciate it T.TÂ

there are people who will try and take advantage of you. the world can certainly be a cold and cruel place. but at the same time, there are many people who care about you. and sometimes itâs hard to be nice to others, especially when theyâre not nice to you. but you can change your actions, and your actions can change other people, for better or for worse. the world is cold and freezing. the world doesnât care. but there are people who do. why make it colder? be kind.
