spoilt rich Aucklanders
Almost a decade at the institution
They say I need to stay
Just to give back to my people
And give back to our communities
And give back to our students
And I have to
give
The last tethers of my dignity
Thin
like white fragility
When the echoes of my ancestors
Are drowned out by their fears
Put up a fight to the institution
With an angry native tone
In sophisticated English
And nothing
could
pierce
them
more
Than their own rolling tears
I turned my back on the institution
When I discovered
My language was a bastard
And my people
Were being discarded
Dropped
Like tickets on Princes street windows
When youâre running for time expired I played the institution
Into thinking theyâd released me
And truth is
I was already free
And I felt
Pity
For the spoilt rich Aucklanders
Thinking what theyâd given me was
opportunity
And I wrote poems at the institution
When I was an Arts student
About how much I loved smoking
And learned that
People enjoy your pain more
Honestly
Like cutting your feet on pipi shells
When youâre trying to avoid the city sand.
