Fat Horse No. 14
It’s the year of the horse and I’ve always been a horse girl at heart, so I’m finally taking advantage of the excuse to fill the world with fat little horses! These felted friends are about the size (and shape!) of an apple, and if you happen to have any apples to share I’m sure they’d help you out! It just wouldn’t be an Irish Cob without the shaggy hair, so I worked out an extra luxurious mane and tail pattern for those who need a little more drama.
This piece and a whole herd of others will be available at my table at Anthrocon July 3-5!
Stranger Things season 1: beneath the superficial image of “peace and prosperity” in 1980s small-town America, there was the painful legacy of countless atrocities committed by the American government in the name of ‘freedom.’
Stranger Things season 4: evil Russians (not Soviets) have sent our All-American Hero to the gulags which apparently still exist in the 1980s and it’s up to us to save him 🇺🇸🦅🫡
There’s probably a term that already exists for this but if there isn’t I’m gonna call it ‘Rambofication’ in honor of its probably most well known instance: Rambo First Blood was about a soldier, John Rambo (that’s his actual name I’m not doing a bit), returning home from the Vietnam war, so traumatized by war that he brought the war home with him to a small town, unable to adapt to life without strict military discipline and hierarchy. Subsequent Rambo movies were about how John Rambo was the only supersoldier tough enough and patriotic enough to kill faceless hordes of dastardly foreign commies.
Ergo, ‘Rambofication’ is the process of a series starting with a relatively nuanced or subversive narrative before its sequels become a shallow embrace of the very narrative it originally subverted. It happens surprisingly often!
In the sociological sense, recuperation is the process by which politically radical ideas and images are twisted, co-opted, absorbed, defused, incorporated, annexed or commodified within media culture and bourgeois society, and thus become interpreted through a neutralized, innocuous or more socially conventional perspective.

"Born of the Broken" by Michael Aguw
If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.

LOOKING AT BLACK CHARACTERS
I made a zine! Rather than being just being a guide on Writing Black Characters, it's a reflection on those guides, popular media (particular Hazbin Hotel and Steven Universe), the eternal discourse wheel, and has some tips here and there.
Created for the Media Essay Zine Jam! Thanks for hosting

FIXES, EDITS, ETC
The zine has been edited primarily to encourage readability and a bit better formatting. This has been an on and off thing I did over the course of June. The zine now is formatted optimally for future editing which means when I edit in the future, I can focus on one page at a time. Before, I struggled a bit due to transitioning from Scribus to Affinity.
There are things I would do differently if I had started with Affinity before Scribus
List of edits are as follows:
Reworded some things I felt were unclear or I felt I could articulate a bit better.
Exported everything at an optimal size for digital consumption and download
Tried to fix more of the capitalization for Black; this can be one of the more difficult things to catch as although I have some grammar checkers now, they do not capitalize Black by default much of the time
Made the addendum slightly less rambley though it is still extremely rambling
Tried to make the typesetting a bit better (though I believe I may redo the typesetting entirely someday in the future)
I included some additional thoughts on masculinity, my identity as a lesbian, etc.
As always, due to having a migraine disorder, I at times introduce more errors when editing my old work. I hope to give the zine a lookover again soon though I may have one of my friends do some more in depth editing and fixing for me.
Thank you!
The zine doesn’t load for me for some reason :(
Is it incompatible with mobile…?
This was an error caused by my last update. (I forgot to resize the thumbnails!)
It is now fixed ٩>ᴗ<)و
