I've decided to get my shit together and open my sketchbook again 🦵🦵🦵 Was mostly inspired by the incredible illustrations of the Diary of Samuel Pepys, an englishman of the 17th century, illustrated by the fantastic E. H. Shepard.
I made the tierlist because I had nothing better to do
crazy how over-populated the abuser tier is 💀💀💀💀💀most of them had enough depth and nuance (except the blonde one tbf) that they belonged high enough (tho i'm not sure the blonde one rly belongs above the C tier one but... whatever)
D tier is goofy brainless moron tier tbf
I wanted to have a little fun with a hybrid, sort of modernized look and attitude, which I tried to keep realistic IN THEORY.
I looked a bit into the history of straws and sunglasses; the straws are fine and not anachronistic--while we have no record of them being used in court, they existed and were used in other cultures, so who knows.
AS FOR THE SUNGLASSES: technically, proper sunglasses only emerged in Europe in the early 18th century, so we are a good 50 years too early. HOWEVER! I have read that in Japan, quartz was already used as a form of sun mask/sunglasses by some societies since around the 1400s iirc, and Roman emperor Nero used emeralds to look at the sun. THEREFORE. While they are anachronistic (the design 100% is for sure), it's fun to imagine that it could have been a very expensive gem-stone design, perhaps imported from Japan or China, that well known fashion-precursor Philippe got his hands on and momentarily popularized in court. It's not true, it's not a thing, but I like the concept, lol.
also gotta admit the concept of wearing sunglasses at the sun king's court is just perfect, like "sorry bro yk you're just too blinding" *puts on glasses*

Inspired by an anecdote transmitted to me by zennie and reported by Jonathan Sprangler: as it so happens, Monsieur, who was known to party until dawn, had managed to obtain a dispensation from the pope himself to attend church morning duties--which he was normally required to as a Prince of such importance.
Ngl I find the whole thing hysterical and I can just imagine the pope getting the request and going: "........is he fucking serious" and still granting it 💀💀💀 I wonder what Louis thought lmfao
FR below, as well as a few additional notes:
Monsieur's role in religion was really not to be understated; and when he attended, he did so diligently. There's another interesting anecdote, reported by Henriette in her letters exchanges with Cosnac, where Monsieur apparently threatened her to not communiate for Christmas lest she made peace with the Chevalier. This was considered extremely alarming, as him failing his duties would mean compromising the redemption of the people of France.
And yet, to allow for his well-known habit of sleeping in, he was still afforded a dispensation LMFAO I really wonder what excuse he found to get it lol.
as much as it kills me to admit it because he's got the most perfect face in the world to me, i think that if they'd had proper anesthesia, better plastic surgery techniques and injections back then, older philippe would have looked like this 🥀🥀🥀🥀
I had to add Chev since OF COURSE given that his face was his most important and lucrative feature would botox it to hell and back and plump it back up, Montespan since she was known to have massive self esteem issues following Louis going for Maintenon, and well, Louis and his awful new teeth and ofc he would get injections as well.
btw i don't mean to shame ppl who do that, or go for surgery. I hate that it's an industry that tries to make money rather than actually help ppl feel better abt themselves, i hate that it reinforces insecurities, i hate that socmed and filters make it ten times worse and i hate to see how actually deeply unhappy most ppl who resort to that kind of aesthetic changes seem to be, but shame isn't a solution either and i don't know what ppl who go for it have in their minds and i am nobody to judge them. Ig this is essentially inspired by me loving to see all these diverse features and faces and realizing how sad I would have been to see them alter them as they aged.

The reunion of '72 after Chev's two years exile is of course very much a staple date in the story of monchevy. Not only did Monsieur warmly welcome the Chevalier back home, he also immediately took back his place as "number three" in the house of Orleans (and number one in Monsieur's heart as per his own words) and kept it until Monsieur died.
What particularly inspired me for this piece was a discussion with @saintzenni about the way Liselotte described Chev upon his arrival: she could tell he was a beautiful man, but he didn't look so good and bore the marks of smallpox. Indeed, he pretty much became a petri dish during his escapade in Italy, coming back not only with chlamydia (which he transmitted to Philippe, and Philippe to Liselotte), but also with chronic malaria and, as stated, pockmarks.
Given that Chev's face was pretty much all he had, it's therefore easy to imagine how dreadful it must have been to see his most precious and successful asset be harmed in this way. And yet, Monsieur seemed to pay it no mind, and his love for him only grew from there, as their biographer attest it did.
I guess the feelings of being together again combined with the bittersweetness of change, of aging, of meeting again after so long, the anxiety easing out yet still lingering, are what I wanted to represent here.
Additional note below!
There are two anecdotes I feel like bringing up related to their relationship. First of all, a both cute and rather awful anecdote related by Henriette in a letter to Madame de Saint-Chaumont, the governess of their daughters:
In her letter, Henriette tells her that Philippe told him about how much he suffered from Chev only being "the third one" in their house, when he was the first in his heart. Because of that, he found her to be a nuisance.
It's pretty terrible to say that to his own wife, but for context, this discussion seemingly took place after Chev was sent in exile, thus when their relationship was at their absolute worst.
What I think this highlights is the intensity of Philippe's feelings and attachement for Chev. Everyone attested that Philippe wasn't himself anymore after Chev was taken away, and once allowed to correspond again when Chev was released from Château d'If, they did so for the two entire years. Chev was even consulted for the remarriage, and asked his opinion about the choice of a new wife.
It is thus rather easy to imagine how high the stakes were, once Chev was told he was going to come back (which, mind you, was announced to him by Philippe himself). Once again, while it's very apparent when reading the more modern findings, and especially Joan Pieragnoli's biography of Chev and François Pollet's work on Philippe's life and relationships, that the two were good friends, even before their romantic/physical relationship started. Nevertheless, Philippe was known for his appreciation of beautiful men, and Chev's life pretty much depended on Philippe's protection at this point. Sure, he could have survived being discarded, one way or another, but the risk of Philippe having moved on or being taken aback by his physical changes wasn't null, even moreso after the long separation. Chev's extreme reactions to potential rivals later on attest of how anxious he was about losing his position (not of course considering the possible emotional jealousy).
Added to that very probable disfigurement-related anxiety was the reality of age. I've always been really fascinated by something that Primi Visconti noted, which is that "What surprised everyone wasn't so much that the chevalier himself chose Monsieur's new mignons, but that he was still the first among them despite being thirty." Some other historians nuance the fact that mignons were necessarily sexual partners--but what this statement could mean is that in general, people aged faster back then, and that past the twenties, they were past their prime. Chev was going to turn 29 a few months after he came back from exile, which means his prime was also about to end. I can't help but wonder if that, on top of the aforementioned fears.
So yeah! Those are still rather raw musings, but I thought it was interesting to share.

For reasons I cannot explain (actually I can, I wanted Philippe badly imitating an italian accent), I have made a comic of Philippe imitating Mazarin for his friends. It's not as funny as I hoped it would be, but I think it does a decent job of characterizing them the way I imagine them, so enjoy!
Next pages, some explanations, ainsi que la version française below! ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Aside from this bad italian accent thing, I wanted to depict one of the ways they were known to entertain themselves with: comedy, mockery and mimickry. Mazarin not being very well liked, and Philippe having had a complex relationship with him, it felt fitting.
This comic is set very early in Philippe and Henriette's marriage, which took place three weeks after Mazarin passed away. For the anecdote, they couldn't make a big ceremony and had to get married in grieving outfits which I'm sure they were DELIGHTED about...........
That is to say, it also explains why they still get along quite well at this point. It's likely before anything began between Henriette and Louis, and during these times Philippe also kept his relationship with Armand quite secret (mind you, a lot of people knew, Henriette included, most likely).
Mazarin deserves his own article one day, for those who aren't familiar with him, so I won't get into the details of why he was so loathed, but one of the reasons was that he was italian. However, his relationship with Louis was excellent; he was his godfather, but Louis pretty much saw him as a father figure. The same cannot be said of Philippe, who's been pretty much ignored by Mazarin most of his life. While some historians have been particularly vicious about it, more moderate ones still acknowledge that Mazarin didn't pay him much mind and, like Anne of Austria, was far more focused on Louis than on Philippe. As a result, Philippe didn't like him, and was reported to be quite impolite towards him during his teens (not greeting him when he entered a room or not showing the appropriate marks of respect expected from him).
For both Anne of Austria and Mazarin, Philippe's behavior during Louis' illness in 1658 resulted in a growth of their respect and appreciation for him. While Anne of Austria apologized to Philippe about having taken so long to properly see him, I don't know if Mazarin ever said the same, and I feel like it's not much of a reach to imagine that Philippe never truly got over the way Mazarin never saw him as a son the way he did Louis -- which is also why I believe he'd be capable of spoofing him as such.
Two additional notes on the content of the dialogues:
Philippe as Mazarin says that he and Armand share "not a vice, but a grand refinement"; this refers to the italian vice, a euphemism for homosexuality, which Mazarin was """accused""" of by the people and which Anne of Austria also alleged.
Henriette speaks of "Monseigneur's lights seeming a little far apart"; this is précieuse slang for being confused.
Hope you enjoyed!
FR:
In the letters concerning the priory, Dubois tries to justify his demands as much as possible. On Fénelon’s advice, he tries his best to minimize the potential monetary benefits he might gain here, being perfectly willing to concede some of the things he already has in exchange for this one. While the priory might have sentimental value for him, he knows money will speak louder in the end here, especially to the king. So, he does some maths!
Some of these letters are written during the Leuze campaign, during which the first half of this comic took place. This certainly must’ve added to Dubois’ fears. In the same letters he writes regarding the priory, we see him deal with the little cabal of mysterious people (probably some friends of Monsieur!) spreading rumors about him. It was a lot to deal with for someone who, most likely, was still struggling to find his place in the House of Orléans.
I'm BACK with a new fanfic! Finally properly introducing my own interpretation of Antoine d'Effiat to my little exploration of historical monchevy's dynamic and relationship.
Once again it's explicit smut because my brain can't be bothered to write anything else. Enjoy it here!
