But now, particularly because of the rapid progress of science and technology, we are suddenly more aware of ourselves and the world than any humans have ever been before. We are more aware of the horrors and paradoxes of our existence. Moreover, because of the modernization and Westernization of so much of the world, we are also more compelled to understand, control, and eradicate these horrors and paradoxes. Western society has largely chosen reason, order, control, and certainty as its weapons in the war against the universe. But every battle is fought in a war that cannot be won. The universe fees no pain. We feel pain for it. The war is thus with ourselves. We have been and will always be the victims of our own tactics.
