The key to writing good fanfiction is to harbor a deeply humiliating desire, and the trick there is that even pretty basic and societally-accepted desires like “being held” and “being wanted” CAN and WILL be humiliating if they’re intense enough. Become so estranged from human connection that the idea of someone playing with your hair fills you with yearning so deep you feel like you’re going to throw up and you will write some banger fanfiction. It might have some other consequences too but idrk about that.

My favorite thing they do in a video game where you can dress up your character is go to a cold region and the NPCs say Better bundle up! And start wearing their winter coats and scarves and so on for that section of the story. Technically as an audience we’d all survive if they just continued to wear the one outfit they were designed with, however impractical for the setting, because that is one of the many oddities that the honed gamer mind is trained to withstand. As the player you are yourself almost never forced to put on a practical glamour for this weather. But it just gets you in the spirit of the thing if everyone is toasty, and it’s really cute besides. And I like when they specifically encourage the player to dress warmly for these sections too, even or especially if it’s a game where there’s no actual Cold mechanic you have to equip against. The game encourages the user to play toys with it
