"we cut the nobody scene from the odyssey" "we cut the religious trauma and parental abuse from carrie" i'm starting to think that studios barely funding original films is starting to have an effect where directors make up a story and then slap an IP on it in order to sell. or maybe some bitches just can't read anymore idk it's one or the other

#uhnnnn I was disappointed 😔 my fwend got us tickets as a surprise and we were disappointed #idk! there was good stuff in it. but overall it didn't resonate the way I was hoping and Odysseus didn't feeeeeel like Odysseus #like he wasn't particularly clever or witty or tricky. he sure was a guy! but he wasn't odysseus. also didnt make enough bad decisions :(#it does feel like a watered-down version for a general audience which like I GET IT but. come onnnn #someone described it as the Cliffnotes version which I agree with. idk I just feel like you CANT adapt the odyssey in one 2.5 hr movie #there's soooo much stuff to get through. I feel like you gotta let each threat BREATHE a bit yk #smiles. Helen and Clytemnestra both being played by Lupita to subtly show the meaninglessness of the war was enjoyable. very good choice.#the men turning into pigs was wonderful. majority of actors said their lines muchly goodly.#lots of good visual moments but eoueughhhhhhguhhhnnn. where's the soul!!!#and I wouldn't even necessarily mind the concept of having the Gods not be Physical Beings in the story there could be smth cool there!!#but the absence felt really noticeable. there was some Crunch missing. the fantasticalness of the Odyssey's really striking and to remove i #loses a lotta the stuff that makes it interesting yk #the thing that's so compelling is that it's a mortal man clawing his way back to the woman he loves + his son over the span of a decade #against all-powerful beings. by the end of the tale he's managed to piss off the sea the sun the sage and the sex offender in the sky #and STILL makes it home!!#through trickery and cunning and sheer force of will!! in a pantheon and mythology where heroes almost exclusively meet horrific fates!#I get the Gods were 'there' in terms of like. storms etc.#but they weren't THERE!! I feel like you gotta give them more presence in a story like the Odyssey.#you've a story taking place majority at sea and ur not using it to show the aspects of Poseidon in unique/scary ways then WHY'RE WE HERE!!#it doesn't need to be A Guy (tm) standing there speaking. but there's so much more to show the PHYSICAL presence of a deity outside of that #Odysseus' only way home is controlled by the being who wants him The Most Dead. come onn. idk perhaps I am too animationbrained but OUUGHHH #idk! there's so much thalassophobia and submechanophobia that can be played with regarding Poseidon w/o there being a guy! get creative man #you can't be afraid of getting too fantastical within a mythological setting :/#and it's not like I need a 1-to-1 adaptation! My fav adaption is STILL O' Brother Where Art Thou. im hardly a stickler for source material #causeidk I think a joy of epic poems is that bc they were mostly passed orally every performer of these tales would've made their own tweak #1000 rhapsodes told 1000 stories of 1000 Odysseus' facing 1000 trials and they guided him home 1000 times!#and I like that this continues to the modern day! I think that is the beauty of adapting these things and engaging w/ these adaptations!#so why are you making it lame!!!!!!#if you're gonna set it in the original era and try to adapt it within it's context at least make it INTERESTINGGGG AUGHHHH #smiles. outis escapes containment for first time since march to ramble. sorry op. runs back to my cave.

#I love how he was adapted. god. GODDDD!!!!#he is simultaneously very different and very familiar to the Barkovitch from the book #I really love this interpretation of him #I think when reading I imagined him a little different? he came off as more jock-y in my mind but that might've been bc of the age I was #reading it at lmao #idk. standard stephen king bully vibes in the book. also so there's sort of a Specific Vibe Of Guy I had in mind reading Barkovitch #but I LOVE the choice they made for him to be more of a weird outcast loner type. very isolated very spiky #the camera was such a good choice... it gives him so much more physicality to express his instability with yk?#he also gets these occasional flashes of sadness? the main one I'm remembering is I think after Ewing in the film. he says all the shit #about 'you should be smiling' but there's that little flicker of worry #also the way he gets on the hill???? such great choices. it's sort of encouragement in his own strange very fucked-up way??? the taunting #definitely not completely lol but you can sort of feel that's part of it. feel like he operates through spite and is trying to evoke that #in others #also the choice of him hitting himself after what happens to Rank? just implies so much about him + what his life and brain must be like #GOD!!!!#idk. just love how they adapted him!! Barkovitch is such an interesting asshole of a character :) and I was happy he wasn't one note!!!#I was worried about how they'd adapt him but I'm very pleased w/ it. I just love how much care was put into every character.
