It’s so interesting to me to think about what the painted Dessendre family did before the fracture. How they functioned, what their jobs were. Obviously they were well off, the family estate being a legit mansion in old Lumiere. Grounds, maids, ski trips, expensive tastes. Verso moved out on his own at some point and lived above a bakery per one of his conversations with Maelle, which is very studio ghibli of him. The story is so compelling and dark that it’s easy to forget that there was a before for painted Verso as well. Before he knew anything was amiss with his family, his world. And he wasn’t the burnt-out soldier living in the middle of the woods looking for a way to end it, either. He was the son of a presumably rich and influential family, an heir to a fortune. I imagine he hated that in the moment, but he very much loved his family too and misses those times that he unknowingly squandered with them while things were peaceful. Uncomplicated. The opposite of what his life would eventually become.

That son was a stranger.
