FE3H Playthrough Doodles - Part 1
Doing a dumb little project where i doodle scenes from fe3h as I play through it. Like a little shitty doodle journal. I'll keep adding to this (I already played Blue Lions and now I'm working through Black Eagles. I am also play Blue Lions Part 2 at the same time so it'll be a little all over the place. Also please ignore the fact that it's obvious that some of these get 10 minutes of my time while others get like, 2 seconds)
Ok Hubie
2. Hubert Rank C
3. This conversation was amazing
4. Every Rank C with Ferdie is him running his mouth while whoever he is talking to throws tomatoes and pocket sand at him (did I mention I love him)
Golden Deer often gets "the house that's the most open and willing to take anyone else who wants out of their own home country/house's bullshit" characterization but imo they're more likely to be the "most open to doing business with you but hardest to actually be accepted and trusted as one of them"
Being from the least ideological and most transactional society means that there isn't a dramatic action or ideological commitment you can make to signal being part of the in-group, you have to be around and show up long enough consistently enough to build up credit and demonstrate you know how the game works until at some point they've let you in and everyone just knows, but there are no guarantees or specific rules about when that "some point" is going to be
Claude's actually really suited for this because he doesn't expect to be fully trusted when he does things politically in the first place. He calls himself an outsider and doesn't expect to fit in/be trusted, but that's actually exactly what makes him fit in when it comes to Leicester. Because nobody starts off fully trusting each other in Leicester anyway, but that's fine because you don't need to fully trust each other or be in ideological agreement for this specific transaction/deal to work, you just need the incentives to align for long enough
He might be an outsider to Fódlan overall but for Leicester specifically he fits very well, because Leicester's already the weird one out among the three countries (wasn't explicitly politically legitimized by the Church saying "they're a real sovereign state now," just fought it out for 20 years and made it work)
So basically
Switching between BE/BL: politically stupid but emotionally legible, individually they can probably adjust and be accepted
Switching from BE/BL -> GD: it can happen but that doesn't mean immediate acceptance and there's a high chance the recruited student will feel like they're not fully an insider until the end of the war
Switching from GD -> BE/BL out of self interest: plausible and already arguably what happens in canon anyway
Switching from GD -> BE/BL out of ideological agreement or commitment: lmao as if
"Leicester cooperating with Kingdom/Empire/Church means they ideologically agree with/are politically sympathetic to Dimitri/Edelgard/Rhea": lmao as if
Tl;dr Golden Deer are the mafia, not the glamorous version with suits and violence and loyalty tests, the one where they're about making money and the suits (appearance of legitimacy)/violence/loyalty test is primarily in service of self-interest (making money)

It's my man's birthday!

I think a good way to translate 3H's countries to modern setting that preserves their structural dysfunction would be something like
Adrestia: single party state that was founded on a genuinely historically progressive revolution but decades later the Revolution™ being invoked as abstract ideology instead of action works as mystification of actual conditions, which is that the party is having repeated purity spiral purges and eating itself while civilian life gets worse; party control relies heavily on narrative and ideology so there's heavy surveillance and censorship, there are a bunch of rival intelligence agencies, there's a party guard separate from the military with better funding, and there's a PMC (Agarthans) the party officials use as personal bodyguards + hitmen on rivals; as a result this PMC has a better map of the dynamics within the party than any single official
Faerghus: junta, military with a state, but not the kind where a single dictator can stay in power for a long time bc military is highly fractured into fiefdom patronage networks and officers are heavily involved with businesses that generate revenue for them independent of state funding; every ambitious general thinks there's a shot as soon as there's some kind of instability, and they're chronically unstable; violence is pretty much the default method to solve political disputes, civil unrest is dealt with like it's combat and civilians get treated as enemy belligerents and massacred because when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail; civilian politician reformers who advocate to change things without violence immediately get merced
Leicester: controlled democracy aka kleptocracy mafia state; oligarch families have their hands in everything, the line between organized crime and business is genuinely blurry, laws are written so that most things are legal for those who are rich enough/have the right connections, even if they're illegal they don't get enforced/only get slaps on wrists/charges get dropped after some bribes; people have just enough disposable income to spend it on distractions like gambling and drinking, dissent isn't as heavily policed because impotent complaining without action is a good pressure release valve, if protests actually gain traction they quickly get co-opted and/or leaders get killed but not via police or military, it's via plausibly deniable hired muscle
Prev gen backstories would be something like
Ionius: became head of party, attempted to consolidate and reform, got backstabbed by Ludwig and other high ranking party officials + his own secret police (Vestras) and purged; the official removal from office and demotion was done via party and party guard, the dirty work of disappearing/killing his kids (many from affairs outside marriage) was done by PMC
Lambert: started off as a general but thought that this democracy thing was kinda neat and tried to pivot to run as a civilian politician (albeit with resources pulled from his military patronage network), gained some traction, got assassinated by rival generals who saw this as a threat (rival generals then scapegoated Duscur for it and rolled troops in there to commit genocide as terrorization + distraction)
Godfrey: it was supposed to be a normal "unfortunate incident" in a longstanding feud between oligarch families where some subordinates/employees got shot by the plausibly deniable muscle but the bosses and execs were fine, however one of the hitmen hired by Gloucesters were actually affiliated with a group that had its own agenda, shot Godfrey, and killed him. Oops
I wish more people leaned into the idea that Crests can give their bearers in-universe powers, just like how Dimitri is always portrayed as having superhuman strength because his Crest's in-game effect boosts the damage of his combat arts.
For example, the Crest of Riegan is the only one of the Ten Elites' Crests that restores HP, so I think it'd be really cool if Claude had some kind of regeneration/self-healing ability, where his wounds heal way faster than a normal person's or he's able to survive injuries that would've killed him if he didn't have his Crest (also since his Crest's symbol is a crescent moon, maybe his regenerative power work better at night?)
Another fun one to consider is Marianne’s Crest of the Beast. It doesn’t grant a unique in-game effect, but considering her affinity for animals, I can see her having animal-controlling or animal-telepathic abilities, which would fit perfectly with her bloodline’s connection to beasts.
i love a morally grey ruthless woman who will do whatever it takes to achieve her goals (that she believes are for the greater good) and is also constantly wracked with guilt about what she's had to do but can't show it so she just comes across as cold and unfeeling to everyone
One of the things I love most about the ATLA universe is the rich world-building, but while they are generally good at fleshing out governments and culture, they kinda dropped the ball on actual religion. Like, human relations with spirits never seem to go that far beyond the "don't tinkle in the ocean" school of environmentalist morality.
I feel sometimes that's why they don't want to expand on things like the Air Acolytes much. The world as a whole and especially the shows feel afraid of calling the Air Nomads a religious group and the Acolytes make that really hard to ignore. The novels improve it a little bit (references to shrines to spirits, praying to avatars, having the Fire Nation refer to Ozai as "divine") but it feels like the team sees religion as this idea that just shouldn't be touched or something.

please read this even if you're not indian. especially if you're not indian.
you've seen the jokes. india is "dirty", indians are "everywhere", why don't they fix their own country. ok. let me tell you why, and what's happening right now while nobody's watching.
first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.
now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:
in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.
and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.
and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.
it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:
• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.
• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.
• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.
• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.
• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.
• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.
and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.
what i'm asking:
if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.
if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.
india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.
we can still save her. but only loudly.
reblog. share. don't scroll past.
