I am a weight, he told himself. I am an inanimate pile of stones for her and nothing more. This was medicine. Treatment for nightmares. A practical means of helping the Avatar sleep through the night, a one-time request in an unusual situation, something she could ask of Yingsu or Juji or Akuudan or anybody. So he could put aside the fact that he was in love with her, because he would do anything for her, and he refused to make anything about their friendship “weird” because she’d asked him to “hold her down” one time.

Because surely this was a one-time thing.

To help her feel grounded and in-her-body while she sleeps, Yangchen asks Kavik to… lay on top of her. A little odd, but what are friends for?

Kavik took Yangchen’s hand. “I’ve said I hated Bin-Er in the past, and maybe that’s still true. But it’s my city whether I like it or not, and I’m not going to let its people be robbed by a thief who doesn’t even need the money. Didn’t you tell me once that we have to fight for complete strangers as we do for our friends?”

It wasn’t like him to make grand gestures. Yangchen half-heartedly tried to pull her arm back, but his grip remained firm. Kavik gently spread her fingers and put them on his neck, over his pulse. His heartbeat was as slow and steady as the changing of the seasons.

It made me realise a couple things:

1) Kavik does has feelings for Yangchen and is displaying them here, and

2) Yangchen doesn’t understand or know how to react to this change in Kavik’s behaviour, and is afraid/unnerved/distrustful. We see something similar near the end of the book, when Kavik agrees to go with Yangchen to the Spirit Oasis. Kavik does it because he wants to help her, but when he softly tells her he’s not doing it out of compulsion Yangchen is distrustful of his motivation at first because she doesn’t recognise that side of him that’s he showing her. It’s only when he gets annoyed at her that she finally accepts that he’s helping her out of his own free will.

Basically, Yangchen doesn’t seem to really process or understand relationships or emotions the same way other people do, and it really shows when she’s interacting with or thinking about Kavik.
