The reason why all of this matters is that China is going to replace us as we decline. Is China going to promote democracy, or freedom of movement, even in a flawed fashion as we have? Is China going to intervene in regional conflicts (which are going to get more frequent in the power vacuum we leave behind) and take part in prosecuting literal, actual genocidaires like Milosevic? Obviously not. It’s not that the US has been a perfect or even a good custodian of world order, it’s that China is going to be unbelievably worse. And everyone will follow their example, not ours.

When the Chinese century, or whatever we want to call it, is in full swing, we’ll think protesting cops for killing unarmed black kids was a fun little fantasy that we can no longer actualize in our minds.
