Here’s a short and VERY self-indulgent comic based on the fanfic Third Wheel - kinda a what-if scenario where smokes returns to the autobots after the last chapter :] I just rly wanna see jazz n smokes make up, man. I miss the outpost and their pocket dimension of insanity

I tried rushing this comic cos i needed to get the brainworm out before i 1. Lost motivation and 2. Have to lock in for schoolwork soon. As a result, im not too happy with how the proportions look and how the dialogue and story flows and also i accidentally drew the specops mechs facing the wrong direction so i had to reverse them and liquify in procreate kinda sucks.....but at the same time, i dont think it really matters. It gets the point across doesn't it lmao
So this idea started mainly cos i wanted to see smokes back with the outpost 49-B6-4 (it's in my autocorrect menu...wow) crowd. Then, i also wanted a dramatic reveal of smokes' spy occupation. Then, i wondered how OP wouldve reacted to prowl telling him about the plan behind smokes' betrayal. I imagine he'd be at least a little pissed at smokes :]
I also dont think that outpost wouldve survived after smokes' betrayal. I imagine theyd have split up into different bases before they blew up from ramping tensions. But...outpost 49-B6-4 my beloved....
The original idea was to make it more joking, like OP tells smokes he needs more friends and tells the specops mechs that hes a spy just like them (sorta)! And in the end smokes wakes up in a cold sweat beside swindle.
Dunno whether i prefer smokey remaining neutral/ decepticon-aligned, or him returning to the autobots. I love the relationships (or, well, relationship singular in the decepticons. But still it's a pretty significant relationship) he's made with both sides.
I started drawing this comic in ibis cos they have better comic/manga support, but then switched over to procreate cos i preferred the feeling of drawing on it. This is kinda weird for me cos i used to much prefer ibis over procreate...well. i still prefer ibis' vector and screentone functions (and their rulers). Hmm. Pros and cons ig. Haha. 'cons
A small cool thing happened to me today and i wanted to share it with SOMEONE
So a few years back i used to read a small book on shells somewhat obsessively. And just now i was watching one of those podcast-like videos by mr hank green and he mentioned an animal that killed people by shooting a harpoon with toxins through its proboscis. I immediately thought 'is it a cone snail?' And the rush of joy and validation i felt when he revealed it was a cone snail was very nice.
I finally found someone who loves g1 smokey😭 guh he is honestly underrated and if i may ask could u give me a list of ur favorite fics of him?
Its honestly so hard to find a good fic of g1 smokey😢 the way the other people write him makes him like a creep and mischaracterize him to the point he is the bad character😭i love his g1 and tfp designs and their personality sm i hate it when people mischaracterize both😭😭

Tbh my first intro to smokes was the tfp characterisation, and then i came to really like the more g1-faithful characterisation when reading the fic MoMU. So! I came to love the character through fanworks, and as such idk if my impression of the guy is entirely canonical. BUT like. Between the tfp n g1 (and armada........? .....nah), his characterisation is so vastly different that id say the threshold for mischaracterising the character gets kinda vague at times
WITH THAT IN MIND
Under the cut are some fics i personally like! The characterisation of smokey varies a lil between all of them lmao (and it includes g1 n tfp characterisation) but i still like em. btw all of these are on ao3:
- Mistakes on Mistakes Until- by jabberish: the fic that introduced me to a more g1 characterisation of smokes. Far more jazz-prowl centric but i loved smokey's role. Everyone and their mother have probably already read it though lmao
- Breaking the Cycle by Umei_no_Mai: an ongoing-but-soon-to-be-finished fic that's more prowl-centric but has smokey as a side character! Honestly i started reading this one purely because I wanted to read the bits with smokes, but the world building in this fic is incredible. Super interesting and thought-provoking read. Plus I enjoy the characterisation of smokes n bluestreak :]
- Third Wheel (and Playing the Long Odds) by Bibliotecaria_D: personally I looooove author's characterisation of smokey. G1 faithful, he's chill and fun and has emotions and is a shady internal affairs spy but ehhhh compared to the crazy weirdos he's surrounded by in autobot high command it's really not that standout (i love the subtle hints at his covert job. Idk why but i feel like his spy stuff doesnt get explored too much in any fic ive read (possibly cos in canon (as far as im aware) it's mentioned only in that one g1 bio of his) so it's always lovely to see it come up) I also enjoy how the tone swings from crack to dead serious. Ive made more fanart for third wheel than i have for any other fic combined, im pretty sure lmao. These fics are pretty heavy on mature themes and sex jokes so if that's not your thing these might not be for you!
- Like Lovers Do by SSSSEEEEVVVVEEEENNNN: tfp smokey. Suuuper engaging dream-like sequence based on the psychic/cortical patch. Expands on smokey's backstory. I love the pacing in this one
- What Happens on a Mission... by pipermca: rarepair! Devcon/smokey. The characterisation of smokey is more like a mix between g1 and tfp smokes imo, which is a fun direction
- Truth Be Told by KrazyCat6167: somewhat more prowl-jazz centric, but still has smokes and bluestreak featuring prominently. G1 characterisation. I really like the mystery and the humour in this one :] smokey starts a bet on whether prowl survives HAHA i think that's amazing
- Evacuation Notice by Millieways: short but sweet - tfp smokey. I like how this showcases tfp smokey's uncertainty, grit, and resourcefulness
- A Smokescreen Obscuring My View by EmmaEntity: a pretty different setting, but intriguing concept :3 currently ongoing, which is super cool!! G1 personality.
AAAND that's all...? I think! Half of these are from memory tbh. Hope there's smth of interest to you in...all that! I included recs of fics featuring tfp smokey because. Because
After looking through these fics i realise that it IS indeed a little difficult to find fics with smokey's g1 characterisation (and have him feature prominently in the narrative). I mean id say that tracks with the amount he's appeared in canon (and showcased a personality..) Nonetheless, there's some really great stories out there with him in them. If anyone else has any other recs please add on!! Id love to read more of this guy :")
