To some, even if only subconsciously, the word "but" can come across as confrontational and argumentative. It can come across as pitting two statements or ideas against each other rather than allowing those two ideas or statements to exist simultaneously. It's also important to keep in mind that some people feel like they're being shut down when someone "but"s them.

So if you're in a delicate situation that you'd rather not escalate to arguing, such as collaborating on a project at work, or discussing an important household problem with housemates, mind your "but"s.

Or, even in situations where most people would rather keep the conversation light and casual, such as the lunch break at work, when everyone is stressed and tired from work and would rather relax than feel like their co-worker is trying to argue with them. Mind your "but"s.

The office immediately split into two factions over it. One says that if anyone falls in the spike pit it's their own fault for being so stupid and not watching where they're walking, so we should remove the sign. The other says that the sign is an insult, there shouldn't be a spike pit in our office at all, and having the sign up like that is just normalising the existence of the spike pit, so we should remove the sign.
