Egyptian silver fish fertility pendant, circa 1913
Coins and fish commonly represent abundance and prosperity. In Egypt's Abu el-Numrus region, fish-shaped pendants were especially popular and were likely crafted by local Egyptian Jewish jewelers.
Romano-Egyptian Gold Chain Necklace with Emeralds and Amethyst, 3rd Century AD
The emeralds are believed to be from “Cleopatra’s Mines” in Egypt.
the demonization of condoms as a method by younger gens is awful because when speaking about sexual health no method is as safe, as easy and as complete as prophylactics, stop thinking about just preventing pregnancies, there's millions of things you need to be protecting against that are not reversible unlike pregnancies
will never not be mad about gig economy apps making a 4 star rating mean “unacceptable quality”
Doordash will suspend you below 4.2 stars.
Uber drivers can be suspended at 4.6 stars.
Lyft drivers risk suspension under 4.8 stars.
Even for apps where they don’t have a publicly stated minimum, their algorithms will bury you.
4 stars does not mean 4 stars. It means 1.4 stars.
If you give a person a 4 star rating, to these companies, you are not saying “I was mostly satisfied with the service, but there’s always room for improvement”—which is what 4 stars should mean—you are voting for them to be fired.
Genuinely, do not ever give people 4 star ratings on gig service apps for any reason that is not a safety issue where their continuation on the app could seriously hurt people.
If someone gives you “just OK” service where you don’t want to give them 5 stars, but you don’t actively hate their existence and hope they die, just don’t rate them.
I'd like to add (and I hope OP doesn't mind me piggybacking on their post) this applies to a lot of other things too.
I'm a teacher, and every year, the State sends out a "climate" survey to all students, parents, and teachers. It has a 1-5 scale and a 'not applicable' option. If you select 4 or 'not applicable' it's marked against the school.
For example, I'm a virtual teacher. The climate survey has questions about the safety and cleanliness of the halls and bathrooms in the school. A normal person would assume that, if they attend a virtual school, they should use the 'not applicable' option, since their school has no halls or bathrooms. Nope, if they select anything but 5 out of 5, our school gets marked down.
Its not just delivery apps that are rigged like this. Keep this in mind. Assume any survey is rigged like this.
The part of this that truly infuriates me is how it intersects with performance reviews. Like, yeah it’s totally unsustainable and horrific that these client/customer/public facing surveys need to be kept near perfect. But meanwhile, on your performance reviews, you better not rate yourself much above a 3. I had a manager once tell me that there should basically be only one person in the district who got a 5 on a metric. That someone getting all 5s was impossible, they’d practically be the second coming of Christ. So, ever since, I’ve been furious at how you’re never supposed to highly value your own work, you know on the bit that’s supposed to deal with you getting a raise (if anyone gets a raise) but the public is supposed to think you, and by extension the company, are Mary Poppins (practically perfect in every way).

abalone
Glass bead necklace with rock crystal pendant, Korea, 3rd-5th century AD
from The Brooklyn Museum
the zendaya thing isnt even a new phenomenon by any means!! the article mentions margot robbie wearing the taj mahal diamond as well, and in addition to that i also want to remind people that diljit dosanjh's request to wear the patiala necklace for the 2025 met gala was denied by cartier because they said it was in a museum and could not be loaned. however they had no issues at all loaning it to emma chamberlain, a white woman, for the 2022 met gala, while they turned down the request of a punjabi man who wanted it to honor his heritage.
this behavior is nothing new. the global south and everything in it - the people, the culture, our heritage - is seen as nothing more than a decoration or commodity to colonizers. i don't even need to bring up the koh i noor or the entire british museum; these examples are recent and egregious enough on their own.
of course this is not to imply that any of the people involved here - zendaya, margot robbie, or emma chamberlain - had any sort of malicious intentions. but the ignorance is just as bad in my opinion. the ignorance is just as harmful, if not more. because it means we are not even an afterthought. it means that the real people and histories and heritages of the global south do not even register when these people are putting together looks for their movie premiers and met gala appearances. everything is just reduced down to a shiny piece of jewelry whose history they need not bother with. it's just a continued reminder of the way colonization affects us all even long after independence, of how barely-healed wounds keep being reopened even decades later. even now, we are being denied connections to our histories and heritages while they are freely being given out to those that have nothing to do with it and don't care for it. and i'm sick of it.

Purse
c. 1650-1680
silk, metal, glass
London Museum
Gold ring with garnet flower, Europe, 8th-14th century AD
from St. James's Ancient Art
& honestly there's no debate to be had the zendaya earrings are orders of magnitude worse than kim kardashian wearing that marilyn dress. yes that piece was a one of a kind unique textile made so specifically for marilyn monroe she had to be sewn into it. at the end of the day it was a ~70 year old usamerican cultural artefact being repurposed by an american for an american cultural event and everyone involved knows exactly where the dress came from + what happened to it + where it went afterwards. zendaya is wearing the looted (or forged) cultural heritage of a people her government is currently bombing & whose lives they have been deliberately making unliveable for decades to a movie premiere that has fuck all to do with iran. we don't know where those discs came from where they were found or by whom & we never will. AND the jeweller appears to have altered them substantially from their original condition. destroying a people's cultural heritage at the same time you destroy their country + their lives so you can look good on a red carpet One Time i want to fucking hurl
The earrings, worn by Zendaya at The Odyssey press tour, are believed to be 2,000-3,000 years old and come at a time when the US is bombing
An archaeologist quoted in the article says "the point of these earrings is not to showcase legitimate ancient artistry, it is to fetishize the past, to be a commodity, stolen from the elite, circulated illegally, and immorally…this is about class signalling."

The nice thing about solar power is that once you've built a solar farm the sun does not then need to be shipped to you through a series of international shipping lanes that can be cut off by other people's governments in response to the actions of other other people's governments. The sun is not subject to the stupid decisions of people you did not vote for in response to the stupid decisions of other people you did not vote for. The sun does not need to go through the Strait of Hormuz.
Even if you don't care about any of the other arguments in favour of solar power, this is a really good argument in favour of solar power.

I wanted to use what ‘reach’ I may have here to share the Carolina Wildlife Center’s urgent plea for donations. If they are unable to raise $75,000 to cover ongoing and future care of their wildlife patients, the center will have to close July 20th, 2026. The services provided by CWC to the community are incredibly valuable, and without them, many wild animals will suffer without the care they need.

You should be starting a recipe book. I don't give a shit if you're only 20-years-old. The modern web is rotting away bit by bit before our very eyes. You have no idea when that indie mom blog is going down or when Pinterest will remove that recipe. Copy it down in a notebook, physically or digitally. Save it somewhere only you can remove it. Trust me, looking for a recipe only to find out it's been wiped off the internet is so fucking sad. I've learned my lesson one too many times.
