While it is so tempting to just sit in this space where queer stories and the way they are told are not in question, when people can use their ignorance to discredit queer expression and when this ignorance itself is a tool of social coercion both enforced upon and by the people wielding it in order to uphold power structures that deny queer people access and autonomy, then I suppose we need to step outside of it once in a while.

Some have been open and supportive. Some have been nuanced and contemplative. Some have been reminiscent of confused evangelical pastors reacting to Pride tweets. But at the end of the day, we are no closer to a universal acceptance of queer stories and especially not of the one at the heart of Supernatural.

I do wish more of them would try to embrace that deconstruction because they truly want to grow and better understand something that affects so many people, particularly when they speak publicly on it and profit from their visibility in doing so. I wish so many responses did not reflect a fear that in validating queerness or acknowledging participation in something queer, perhaps especially without having known so, some perceived inherent queerness within themselves will be treated the same way they treat it. As much as I may wish for these changes, they’re certainly not things that can or should be forced. We can hold people to higher standards and expect them to do better, but when they don’t this is their failing, not ours.

We have created fan works to explore every possibility or interpretation or wish, and their existence and enjoyment in no way serve as evidence that the canon story was not queer on its own. Fan fiction is a subversive art form, taking restrictive ideas and stories and freeing them into a space of unfettered creativity, desire, and collaboration, and though some may act derisive about it due to what I can only assume are deeper insecurities about their own place in a creative and cultural hierarchy, fan fiction should not be discounted as a powerful avenue for queer autonomy and for the affirmation of queer storytelling traditions and communities.

Queer storytelling has always been shaped by what cages it and it has always used love and utter humanity to turn its bars into windows. To turn locks into keys, within stories and without. We’ve never needed to be told who we are and we don’t need to be asking now. It is our refusal to be erased from the narrative that fuels our refusal to be erased from the world. Sometimes, just existing in it with conviction is both the easiest and hardest resistance of all.
