I love how in historical movies or TV shows or books sometimes there'll just be peasants in the background doing Unspecified Manual Labor. The lack of research and thought put into the daily activities of anyone but the rich and beautiful protagonists... their lives are simple and monotonous, but noble, too, in their unceasing dedication to Unspecified Farm Task.
Another thing i love is those videos of IRL artisans who've dedicated their lives to making clothes or pottery or paint etc The Old Fashioned Way, which always seems to involve 27 discrete and incredibly arduous steps which really just shatter the myth of 'unskilled labor' and reveal the incredible amount of care and ingenuity that the human race has put into developing even the simplest-seeming technologies of everyday life.
So anyway, here's what i want: i want a short film which presents itself as a beautiful slow-paced documentary about some sort of traditional craft, except that as time goes on it becomes increasingly unclear what the end product is actually meant to be. We're digging a hole. We're harvesting clay. We're making and firing bricks. Building a wall. Inside the wall, we're... planting flax? Oh, are we making linen?! We're harvesting and spinning the flax into thread. We're weaving it into... oh, that's lace!!! That's -- ok, no, uh, we just tossed it in a lake. Is it a net? for fish? Uh-oh, it's winter now - the lake's frozen over. I can't decide whether it ought to be entirely silent or have interviews throughout with incredibly eldery people talking (through subtitles, of course; it is unclear what language they are speaking or where they are from) passionately about the history of their craft and the importance of passing on tradition. Now we're smashing the ice, and taking out the Flaxen Thing - we're salting it and hanging it up to dry. We're chopping and grinding it into a fine powder and sprinkling it on the ground. I haven't decided if there's a particular political or artistic message to this film or if it's simply for my own sick pleasure. Now we're digging a hole again
nice pair of characters who trust each other more than anyone else in the whole entire world it would sure be a shame if one of them betrayed that trust for the sake of trying to keep the other alive. it would sure be a shame to love someone so much you destroy them
“i need you to live even if it means you never forgive me for this” is an emotion

the fact that eric kripke isn't even christian really adds something to the way christianity is depicted on supernatural. because its really not about being christian at all, but about living in america, a country dominated by christianity, and having to decide for yourself how to handle that. faith is huge in supernatural, and the mythology of the show is very bible-centric, but notably, christ is never there. even sam, who starts out revering the angels, who once said he prays every night, doesn't actually call himself a christian or imply that he believes in jesus--the show is steeped in christianity and biblical lore and yet neither sam nor dean are christians. in fact, over and over again the church itself is depicted as a haunted house that sam and dean will only ever enter as strangers, as outsiders. priests, preachers, faith healers, chapels, crypts, etc. are all just iconography that create an intense sense of unease that sam and dean respond to instantly. as a jew, its very relatable. an essential part of living in america when you're not christian is that exact sense of unease, of knowing that the culture of your country has ensured that you'll get knocked over by christianity no matter where you go, that you'll see hundreds of people truly believing they're good people while doing awful things in the name of their god, and you have no choice but to confront that. kripke gets it

The voice in your head telling you the dog-motif is overdone is wrong. Do not listen to it. Give them a muzzle. Give them a choker or a collar. Chain them to a fence. Give them sharp canines. Give them pavlovian responses. Give them puppy dog eyes. Put them in a cage. Give them themes of obedience, loyalty and love intertwined unhealthy. Give them attachment issues. Make them bite. Give them themes of taming, domestication and ferality. Give them actual, literal, rabies. Kick them while they're down. Microchip them. Scratch their hair behind their ear. Call them a good boy/good girl/etc. and watch them perk up in response. Put them in a shock collar. Give them a metaphorical treat to reward good behaviour. Make them beg for scrapes of affection.
The possibilities are endless.
Arthur: So you have magic?
Merlin: Uh… yeah?
Arthur: for how long?
Merlin: Since birth.
Arthur: And you’re a dragon lord?
Merlin: Yeah my father was and it gets passed down.
Arthur: Sounds like royalty.
Merlin: No? I don’t think so.
Arthur: Yes it is, that means you’re a noble, a lord. We can get married now.
Merlin: WHAT???
