I played fallout 4 first and went down the Minutemen route because I could never kill Danse, then I played fallout New Vegas (lowkey a culture shock because I was so bad with the slightly different controls) but here's my opinion on both of them.

Imo I prefer combat in Fo4 purely because there's more of it, you're always running into raiders and super mutants so there's an element of surprise. Obviously that's limited in Fnv because the Mojave is technically safer and more developed since Vegas was protected by the bombs, but most out of the blue conflict is sparse, and mostly made up of powder gangers (easy to kill) and wasteland creatures (mostly easy to kill, especially with a companion like Boone). The hardest things to kill are lowkey Cazadors (put them in hell) and even when you're vilified to a faction the hit groups are sparse and you can just disguise yourself.

I honestly can't make up my mind if I prefer the levelling up system in Fnv or Fo4 but I think a mix would be really good. I think adding points to attributes such as sneak, speech, and lockpick (instead of using levelups on those things individually) is better, but perks should be like Fo4 where they relate to a specific SPECIAL attribute .

I prefer the Fnv factions because there's the major players but also minor factions such as the Great Khans and there's real geopolitical tension in Fnv which Fo4 lacks, as the dispute is purely based in differing ideologies instead of territorial. Also, in Fo4, because you get introduced to the Railroad so late in the game and they're so secretive it's hard to support them as they just feel insignificant, although in Fnv early game you get much more exposure of the NCR and they're clearly portrayed as the "good guys", which makes it slightly harder to side with the Legion and it lacks nuance in that regard.

Fo4 definitely do companions better, you meet them in scenarios where you get a glimpse of their personality, and it's much more straightforward imo when you ask them to be a companion since there's no requirements really to make them become your companion. Also in Fo4 they're more dynamic and you actually get glimpses of their personality based on their comments and likes/dislikes whilst for Fnv I honestly forgot they were there unless they killed something or stopped to tell me something.

Just a few differences I found between, there's tons more but I love both games and honestly I think Fallout 3 has the best of both worlds, especially with gameplay.
