I always thought the backstory given for the Ventriloquist and Scarface in the mainline comics was kinda weird. Ok, specifically him not being the one who created Scarface, it was his cellmate named Donnegan.
Here's my rewrite, keeping some elements of canon:
Wesker was born into a powerful organized crime family, and saw his parents assassinated by thugs from a rival family as a child. Wesker develops dissociative identity disorder after this. Growing up in an orphanage, his only outlet was ventriloquism (and just playing with dolls and plushies in general).
As an adult, Wesker began a career in children's entertainment and comedy. That's when he created Scarface (originally named Woody, cause he was an uncreative man). Woody was a positive outlet/coping mechanism for his childhood trauma and general repressed bitterness, as Woody could filter it through comedy. Although Woody was sarcastic and snarky, he was still a good “person” who Arnold used to feel safe and make himself smile.
When Bruce Wayne was a kid recovering in the hospital after the mugger shot him and his parents (Bruce survived getting shot, they didn’t), Wesker was hired to entertain him with Woody.
After Wesker “accidentally” killed a man in a bar fight due to his pent-up issues, he and Woody end up in Blackgate Penitentiary (usually prisoners can't take personal items to their cells, but in extremely rare circumstances, a specialized sensory or comfort item might be permitted if prescribed by facility medical or mental health staff and explicitly approved by prison administration. Aka Wesker had panic attacks without the doll and they caved).
Wesker's cellmate Donnegan is a crazy piece of shit who steals Woody away from Wesker and lashes out and beats him whenever he tries to take Woody back.
Wesker is about to h*ng himself in their cell one night, and this is when his repressed other personality fully comes out for the first time, being represented through Woody. Woody tells him not to k*ll himself, and convinces him to kill Donnegan. Wesker doesn't want to, but Woody forces Wesker to steal Donny's hidden knife and put it in Woody's hands so “he” could do it. Woody tries to kill Donnegan, but he wakes up and they fight.
Donnegan is about to kill Wesker, but Woody “saves” Wesker (aka Wesker grabs Woody again) by shielding him from the knife, getting scratched. They manage to kill Donnegan. Scarface convinces Wesker to make Donnegan's murder look like a suicide.
Sometime later, Scarface hatches a plan to escape prison. Woody isn't the same anymore. He now realizes that the only way to keep him and Wesker safe is to become bigger, louder, and more powerful than everyone in Gotham. He now demands to be called Scarface.
And thus it begins.
Scarface constantly abuses and harasses Wesker. Is it because Wesker subconsciously hates himself? Is it his subconscious way of trying to make himself tougher? Is he a masochist who secretly enjoys humiliation? All of the above? Who knows…
It is possible for Wesker to be cured and for Scarface to remain. Scarface in a way would be cured too and decide to go back to being Woody, but with the added maturity of his time as Scarface.
Scarface sometimes thinks about his days as just a silly little vaudeville puppet, telling corny jokes.
