With both Merlin and The Untamed I knew the fanfic was going to be amazing because there were so many places canon could have been/gone better. The only way I suffered through the last season of Merlin was reminding myself that the fanfic was gonna be great. It was.

I agree with this in the case of shows with actual actors. I wildly disagree with this in terms of anime. There are many nearly perfect or perfect anime out there that are FLUSH with fanfic (Haikyuu, Full Metal Alchemist, Kuroko’s Basketball). I will say though that I think this is because anime tends to be more focused on getting through the plot than hanging out with the characters just for the hell of it like we often get in regular tv, meaning there is less time seeing the characters doing random shit or interacting with each other for non-plot reasons and thus more space to imagine them in situations.
