i feel like i haven’t posted anything actually coherent or analytical in awhile about tbhk so. i’m gna address this point i made on tiktok a few days ago 🫰🫰
i hate hate hate when people dumb kou’s character down to “he’s such a green flag” & “the healthiest option for nene btw” & “kounene would be so healthy” because what. so like you’re js ignoring all of his character development ok.
people will see a character with basic kindness and respect and think “omg he’s such a green flag” so there’s a different between being a respectful character and a green flag…!
yes kou minamoto is on the more kind-hearted side of tbhk’s characters. but that’s also just part of his surface level traits. by dumbing him down to solely his kindness ur js like. erasing all his nuance. his kindness is the reason why he sympathizes with supernaturals after hanako. his kindness is why he’s loyal to a fault to people he loves. his kindness is why he can’t exorcise mitsuba.
so now take it even deeper: if kindness is the surface level reason, then what else is behind it?
kou sees the good in supernaturals because it was in his morality that he knew it was wrong to judge spns immediately. kou’s loyal to a fault because he’s never chosen first, so he does anything to prove he’s wanted. kou cant exorcise mitsuba because out of anyone, he felt most wanted by mitsuba to fulfill his wish. yes there is kindness involved, but he also runs off of impulse and desperation and selfishness.
it’s because of that impulse that kou performs rather recklessly. the most obvious example is the ch48 scene. to prove that he can be useful, he offers to jump off a building for mitsuba. he’s not even suicidal. he wanted to understand mitsuba, he wanted mitsuba to trust him. another example is the ch99 scene, when kou exorcises a supernatural for the first time and forces mitsuba to eat it. he’s pissed and hurt that mitsuba didn’t talk to him about his spn diet change, that mitsuba would rather go to tsukasa over him.
a rather underrated example is the ch90 scene when kou fights against no6, and he goes on about knowing how weak and unreliable and stupid he is and feels, but he puts himself head first in those dangerous situations anyway. because if he defeats no6, possibly could’ve become no6, he would’ve been able to save everyone physically there (teru, aoi, akane) and even nene’s lifespan and mitsuba from the severance. he puts so much burden and pressure on himself, thinking that if he sacrificed himself—well at least he saved all of his loved ones right??
and isn’t that. kind of what happens in alterations. he rushes on head first to save sousuke that he literally ends up dying. especially if he’s fated to do this in every timeline, it js goes to show how much kou will run on impulse and sacrifice himself.
he is so so so emotionally nuanced and idk how people see all that he goes through and thinks “omg… the healthiest character in all of tbhk btw” ????? kou is just as fucked up as anyone in the main cast. he acts drastically and on impulse to feel needed by people. he puts everyone else first before even thinking about himself in an unhealthy way.
anyway thank u for coming to my kou minamoto yapping fest 💗💗 i love kou
