chinoiserie and japonisme are back for real and it’s just so baffling to me. like there are nice pieces that come out of any art/design movement for sure, and the whole reason why those movements exist in the first place is. well one because of colonialism AND also there’s a lot of extremely beautiful Asian material culture and western artists were inspired by it and Europeans and Americans wanted it in their homes. but when I say chinoiserie and japonisme are back I don’t mean classy stuff! I don’t mean tasteful well-made vintage pieces or new works that show respectful appreciation for the cultures they draw from! NO. racist tacky garbage is IN! weird little American- and British-made figurine lamps of Chinese peasant caricatures are in the homes of 80% of rich people now! what is happening!

is it merely inherently cringe to be topical in the moment or have my faves who were writing insightful-to-me-viewing-after-the-fact political work in 2004 truly become milquetoast and lame
