What drives Maki's entire character arc is her desire to destroy. The Zen'in household, the very air of it dripping with the elders' rigid mentality of out-dated tradition, gave her no room to breathe, tried to smother her, and her flame burns ever so brighter 'in the open air' when she leaves. Next time Maki crosses the threshold of her family house, desolation follows in her footsteps. She rages against the confines forced upon her, and she destroys in a gesture of ultimate liberation.

It is undeniably tragic and yet poetic that Mai wields the opposite power, her cursed technique, labeled 'Construction', allowing her to create. And there's surely something to be said about the symbolism of Mai's ability to create something from nothing. The clan's strict hierarchy and narrow-minded superstition left the twins without as much as scraps, bare minimum to make one's existance bearable. And even so Mai managed to find something to hold on to, something, someone to call happiness -- her sister. But just like Mai's technique is not enough create anything big or complicated, whatever happiness she constructed for herself back then was never enough for Maki.

Mai's self-sacrifice serves as her final creation, though this time she creates through destruction and for the sake of destruction. She gives up on herself, gives herself up, and her last wish is for her creation to be used to destroy, to destroy everything. And Maki does as Mai wishes, burns everythig to the ground, but her sister's sacrifice turns her destruction to creation. Because what will some day, somehow come in the wake of the bloodshed and tragedy and loss is hope -- for the better future born out of ash.

There's that beautiful interplay between Maki and Mai's characters, between destruction and creation: 'You are me, and I am you'.

I hate to bother you and if you’ve already answered stuff about this ignore me but: do you you have any tips for developing your own style and getting proportions right in drawings? Also your art is amazing

i’m not great at tips, but for me developing a style will always be about drawing insp from artists around you. find 3-5 artists and what exactly you love about their style. obviously don’t copy directly from them but trying to incorporate elements of their style into your own will naturally help it develop. eg i love how dynamic and expressive princecanary’s work is, the warm colours tecochet uses, spidertam’s use of lighting, how velinxi blends shades, to name a few!

as for proportions... practise, obvs, with lots of life drawing. this site gives you poses on a timer (there’s nudity but you can filter it out if ur not into that). actual life drawing classes are great if u can get to any. aside from that, i end up using my own body for reference. how long should the forearm be? well, how long is it against my own torso? junk like that

anyway i’m still very much learning myself, so sorry for any wonky advice!! good luck drawing!!!

looking at this as objectively as possible, i can see why gege chose this route. it fits into the theme of sorcerers not being heroes, and it fits the conclusion that yuji came to at the end of shibuya—he realizes there's a point where he's willing to do everything possible to achieve a goal (killing mahito and curses in his case). he's willing to be a cog, he's willing to throw away everything in pursuit of it. he's no different from mahito.

and i feel like this is now the conclusion that yuta and the main cast have reached against their fight with sukuna. they're not heroes, they can't afford to hold onto humanity and morality and idealism in a fight like this.

and since the beginning, i feel like the idea of a "proper death" has been upended over and over again—for all of yuji's determination to ensure people die properly, we see people dying in a variety of ways that aren't traditionally proper, so we're kind of meant to question what a proper death even means. is any death proper?

so i GET where this is all coming from, but i guess personally i'm having difficulty finding much satisfaction from the angle that gege's been taking for the last however many chapters, because i do feel like there were more... optimistic ways of approaching these same themes. jjk's been bittersweet for a long time now, but it's rapidly approaching an oversaturation of "bitter" for me LMAO
