Woyzeck, Thalia Theater
Director: Jette Steckel
Designer: Florian Loesche
So this Is Woyzeck, If your not familiar, become familiar it is a fantastic play. Due to it’s nature (the death of the author, a loss of an ending, episodic scenes) the play is highly malleable. It often has dramatically different productions or even adaptations. For instance a post made earlier on this blog by JLP talked bout the DROWNED MAN by PunchDrunk theatre. I actually had the privilege of seeing that production right before it closed in London this summer. Absolutely my favorite play of all time. Drowned Man is an adaptation of Woyzeck, a really fantastic adaptation, but in comparison, the pictured above is a production of the same play. Drowned Man took millions and millions of dollars, a city-block-sized 5 story warehouse and months on months to put up. The stage above is just a gigantic rope netting. Yet both of these scenic designs on the whole end up giving the audience a sense of eire unease and instability. The power of a good play is endless possibilities. My university is doing an adaptation of Woyzeck next year. I could not be more excited.
