#Indian #Nations saved #LewisandClark By Robert J. Miller The Lewis and Clark #Expedition undertook an exceedingly difficult, #dangerous and perhaps even #superhuman mission. Most #Americans are well aware of its exploits and success. What is less known is the fact that Indian nations and individual Indians provided crucial assistance to the expedition. Without the help of #indigenous people and Indian #tribes, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark may not have succeeded in their mission or even survived the attempt. In fact, two very important members of the expedition itself were Indians— #Sacagawea and George #Drouillard. Drouillard was half #Shawnee Indian. Meriwether Lewis hired him in November 1803 and paid him five times more than the expedition’s enlisted men. He was well worth the extra pay, and many experts have called him the third most important person on the expedition, after Lewis and Clark themselves. Drouillard was valuable because he was the best hunter on the expedition and provided most of the food. Lewis wrote in 1806 that the expedition would not have survived “were it not for the exertions of this excellent hunter.” In addition, Drouillard spoke many Indian #languages and was an expert in Indian sign #language. At many crucial points of the voyage, Drouillard was the only person who could #communicate with the native people. Lewis praised Drouillard’s useful sign language and woodsman #skills and also wrote that Drouillard had been involved in “all the most dangerous and trying scenes of the #voyage, in which he uniformly acquitted himself with honor.” (at Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea Statue)
#Environments 1 (1969)Edit Side 1: The #Psychologically #Ultimate #Seashore (30:00) The initial #recording in the #series goes back to 1968. Working under the direction of Tony #Conrad and Beverly Grant Conrad, #Teibel recorded #ocean waves at Coney Island for use in their #feature #film "Coming Attractions" (1970). Teibel immediately sensed the #marketability of this #material, noting its effect on improving #concentration, enhancing #sleep and #sex, and imparting a sense of #calm to the listener. Conrad, who wished to credit Walter De #Maria for his prior usage of #ocean recordings, was not willing to become a partner in the #Syntonics #Research enterprise as envisioned by Teibel, so Teibel parted ways with the "Coming Attractions" project. Subsequently Teibel himself felt unsatisfied with his results — though his #Uher #stereo reel-to-reel #tape recorder had faithfully captured the sounds of the #surf, he felt that they were less convincing on playback. A friend of Teibel's, Louis #Gerstman, had access to an #IBM 360 computer, and he and Teibel played around with processing the recordings until eventually the two of them hit upon a series of manipulations (basically some rolling filtering and overdubbing) which sounded 'more real than real.' Side 2: Optimum Aviary (30:00) For the second side of the LP, Teibel recorded an enclosure of birds at the Bronx Zoo aviary. Later soundscapes were much more naturalistic. (at Bronx Zoo)

"Technically, #Jyotish should not be called #Vedic #Astrology. For #Yagnas and #Karmakanda the #Vedas are the #authentic #source. For the #householders it is the #Smritis. But both the Vedas and Smritis are in the #Puranas. Just as the entire #Creation has emerged from #Him, so too the entire #literature of the world is an offshoot of the Puranas. There is no iota of doubt about it. In the Vedas, there is no #methodology provided to determine #Tithi, #Vaar, #Nakshatra, or #planetary #Sanchara (transits). Even the methodology for determining #timing of #Parvas (festivals), or #Eclipses is not mentioned in the Vedas. What is not in the Vedas is in the Smritis. And whatever is not found in these two is to be known from the Puranas." - K.N. Rao

There is also a special invocation to Chitragupta as Dharmraj (Lord of #Justice) to be made at the performance of shradh or other rituals. "Om tat purushaya vidmahe Chitragupta dhimahi tena lekha prachodayata." The priests also pay reverence to Chitragupta: "Yamam Dharmarajya Chitraguptaya vain namah."

#Celeriac (Apium graveolens var.rapaceum), also called #turnip-rooted #celery[3] or #knob celery, is a variety ofcelery cultivated for its edible roots, #hypocotyl, and shoots. It is sometimes called celery root.[4] It was mentioned in #Homer's #Odyssey as #selinon.[5] Celeriac is a root #vegetable with a bulbous hypocotyl. In the #Mediterranean Basin and in Northern #Europe, celeriac grows wild and is widely cultivated.[2][3]It is also cultivated in North #Africa, #Siberia, Southwest #Asia, and North America.[2] In North America, the Diamant #cultivar predominates.[6]Celeriac originated in the Mediterranean Basin.[2] Culinary useEdit Typically, celeriac is harvested when its hypocotyl is 10–14 cm in diameter.[6]However, a growing trend (specifically in #Peruvian and South #American #cuisine) is to use the immature vegetable, valued for its intensity of flavour and tenderness overall. It is edible raw or cooked, and tastes similar to the stalks (the upper part of the stem) of common celery cultivars. Celeriac may be roasted, stewed, blanched, or mashed. Sliced celeriac occurs as an ingredient in #soups, casseroles, and other savorydishes. The leaves and stems of the vegetable are quite flavoursome, and aesthetically delicate and vibrant, which has led to their use as a #garnish in contemporary fine dining. The shelf life of celeriac is approximately six to eight months if stored between 0 °C (32 °F) and 5 °C (41 °F), and not allowed to dry out.[7]However, the vegetable will tend to rot through the centre if the finer stems surrounding the base are left attached. The #freshness of the vegetable can be determined by viewing the hollowness of the vegetable; a fresh celeriac should not have a hollow centre.[7] The freshness of the vegetable will also be obvious from the taste; the older the vegetable, the less potent the celery #flavour.

Can we say of anything that it #exists when all #passes away, when #time, with the #speed of a #storm, carries all things onward, -- and our #transitory #existence, hurried along by the #torrent, is either swallowed up by the #waves or dashed against the rocks? There is not a #moment but #preys upon you, -- and upon all around you, not a moment in which you do not yourself become a #destroyer. The most innocent #walk deprives of life thousands of poor #insects: one step destroys the fabric of the industrious ant, and converts a little world into #chaos. No: it is not the great and rare calamities of the world, the #floods which sweep away whole #villages, the #earthquakes which swallow up our towns, that affect me. My #heart is wasted by the thought of that destructive #power which lies concealed in every part of #universal nature. #Nature has formed nothing that does not consume itself, and every object near it: so that, surrounded by #earth and #air, and all the active powers, I wander on my way with aching heart; and the universe is to me a fearful #monster, for ever devouring its own #offspring. #Goethe
