John Waters
i love fucked up lil guys so i do prefer the book version of grace, or rather, in particular, i prefer the coma gene inclusion because it really drives home that grace NEEDED to go, so it makes his cowardice even more poignant because of that. in the movie, due to the lack of the coma gene storyline, it's not as necessary that it must be uniquely him to go on the mission, so it plays into the whole martyr complex idea that grace was unfairly targeted a bit too much. again i personally do not agree with this take and i still believe that grace was the only person to choose to go and stratt was 100% justified in doing it. but in the book its more like shes 125% justified in doing it. also grace's pure fear was depicted so well in the movie that it really does make it seem like he's some hunted animal being trapped and preyed on. literally the amount of fan art ive seen that depicts that scene in a metaphorical prey animal way is crazy. in the book though, in stereotypical scifi fashion and especially in andy weir fashion, the fear is there but its much more clinical and not nearly as raw in the movie. so the book really does not make you sympathize with him nearly as much because it does not feel as scary and even if it was it's like well shit fuck man i dont really care because you're gonna throw away 8 billion human lives because you dont feel like going. god damn.
anyway. so all this to say. i do prefer the the way the book shapes his personality regarding his cowardice because i personally love fucked up lil guys with fatal flaws. and in terms of the fucked up lil guys i typically enjoy, his fatal flaw being cowardice is pretty unique
so basically i do not really like that it seems as though people tend to kinda whumpify his character too much. like im sorry im sympathetic to a certain extent but not too much. like does it suck he was in that situation? yes absolutely and he absolutely would have a complex about it going forward post canon however you need NEED to acknowledge that it wasnt a WRONG decision of stratt to make. like grace himself IN BOTH THE BOOK AND THE MOVIE acknowledge by the end that stratt made the right call. he'll still have a chip on his shoulder about it but he knows by the end that it was the correct move. so like thr way people are really harping on it kinda really annoys me . like sorry i dont find the fatal flaw somthing to be whumpifying. im not sympathetic about it.
perhaps even, and im just thinking out loud here, perhaps its even just the nature of how people whumpify it. like the thing that does make me sympathetic for him is just the pure fear that is involved in a one way mission of this scale. its the fear that made him not want to do it. the fear is the point. and watching him in the movie literally physically run for his life was really striking. and as a scientist he knows the logical move, he admits it, but hes just too scared to accept the logical, utilitarian choice here. and frankly, if there was somebody else thrust into this position with grace being stratt's henchman in forcing the person into it, i honestly feel like he would agree with stratt too . he's only upset and holds a grudge against her because its him who has to live with it. he would feel bad about it, in a way that stratt doesnt, but like i dont think he would stop her. he'd be in a similar role to like carl i think
so really if you want to write whump around this specific aspect of grace's character, then focus on the pure animalistic fear of not wanting to die. i dont fucking give a shit about the oh no i was forced into it. oh nooo. i dont care and it just makes me roll my eyes.
SO REALLY THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS POST: IF YOU WANT TO WRITE WHUMP. ROCKY IS RIGHT THERE???
i feel like rocky is actually CRIMINALLY undervalued in this fandom, somehow. from the prevalence of bloodymary (how is a random ship with a dude from a whole different fucking franchise more popular than the ship between like, the two main protagonists? is rocky not fuckable to you people? is a character being fuckable the only reason you people care about characters?? ryan gosling is more fuckable than a rock so you'd rather write whump about his character even if his character is far less sympathetic????) to the criminal lack of acknowledgment around ROCKY'S TRAUMA, im just like. god damn people
and maybe im venompilled! maybe im used to a fandom who focuses more on the alien than the human. but like, rocky went through so much more than grace did. why are we not focusing more on that.
rocky was alone for DECADES. DECADES. humans are a very communal and social species but eridians are even moreso. and bro was alone for DECADES. his people died brutally through RADIATION SICKNESS. thats not a fast death! thats slow and its gruesome. one by one, each of his crewmates suffered and died and he just had to watch until he was the only one left and he had no idea why he survived. that alone is fucking crazy but then add on the DECADES of isolation that followed . and add on the unique eridian cultural standards like needing somebody to watch you sleep, and he had NO ONE, its just like
it drives me crazy!!!! rocky went through so much but then people are all like oh no grace didnt want to go on the mission :((( LIKE I DONT GAFFFFFFFF... WHAT THE FUCK ABOUT ROCKY !!!!!
call me a mouse the way im so modest
I killed, I killed my own shadow.

Listening through the new Modest Mouse album and it's pretty alright-
I wish I paid attention to every word that you ever said But you always spoke in a whisper And I wasnât good at listening
What does it all mean? Do you get high on your own low self esteem? Did you fall on your own only dream And crush it until it was all broke?
love the transmasc grace hc but something abt him always referring to himself as grace and wearing a skirt in the first ten minutes of the movie⌠transfem realness. let her out
wait now iâm curious whatâs everyoneâs go-to pair of shoes

oh my goddddddddd thats not the pointttt. have you never heard of like dramatic irony or any sort of narrative story telling tools
the context of this comment is on a PHM analysis video and the comment thread is discussing the theme of love in interstellar; in particular, the op of this thread is complaining about anne hathawayâs characterâs monologue about love
this comment is annoying the fuck to me because
anne hathawayâs character brand is not monologuing about love in an empirical âiâm a scientist therefore i can speak empirically about everythingâ way. like god damn she is a human person and she is philosophizing. literally every person who thinks will philosophize especially when put into a situation like interstellar and when discussing things like Love. god damn no do not leave love to the âexpertsâ because that wasnât the point to her monologue. the point was not about the biochemical reactions that fuel it, its not about the evolution that encouraged it to form, its not about the neuroscience and the behavioral ecology, its about the human experience, which news flash, all humans are allowed to philosophize about. shes not âmaking claims outside of her field,â she is literally just explaining her perspective on life. shes qualified to talk about the human experience because she is a human. oh my god
i agree that the phenomenon, especially in scifi, where scientists being knowledgable in their subject must mean they are knowledgable across the board, is irritating! and you know media is guilty of that here ?!?!?! project hail mary !!!!!! the novel
i think this is my favorite off the new album
when the beat picks up in a modest mouse song and im bathed in a soft golden light and lifted into the sky by angels

modest mouse is so interesting bc theyre my favorite midwest emo band yet they havent made midwest emo music since like. 2004. and their sound has evolved so much since then it isnât any form of emo at all, its like, what the fuck genre even is it. its just uniquely modest mouse. like any other band that has had its sound evolve to this extent would have people lamenting about how theyve abandoned their roots and yet the new music slaps just as fucking hard so no one is complaining
how it feels to listen to float on by modest mouse
