everyone keeps comparing project hail mary and interstellar in a like "which one is better" way but like i really cannot compare them. the only thing they have in common is that they are both space scifi films. otherwise they are two entirely different movies each unique and beautiful and enjoyable in their own entirely different ways

also because i didnt pay much attention to the technobabble, a large part of that is because the math is written in prose. which is like insane. does anyone, even math phds, want to read math in prose form? so i genuinely didnt absorb anything i really just read it without internalizing it because its like man fuck if i know. kinetic energy is one half mass times velocity squared. thats nothing to me. i need it written out as an actual math formula for me to understand it and internalize it. so im kinda like... what if i reread the book. but annotated it. i never annotate books wouldnt that be fun. and as i annotate... i DO THE MATH?? that way perhaps i could appreciate the technobabble more. ultimately the prose of the technobabble im still not impressed with but at least i could appreciate the hard work that went into like, andy weir doing the math to just tell the story

but on the other hand. would rereading a book that i literally just finished within 2 days be kinda crazy or what

almost done with phm book and unfortunately these IG comments do sum it up for me. i do honestly think the movie is better than the book in most respects. which is why i really wish i had been able to read the book before i saw the movie because i cant tell if im biased here or not. but these comments sum up my feelings on the book

#especially the cross disciplinary expertise that grace seems to have #like bro you have a phd in molecular biology why do you also know special relativity and all things astronomy #we see him puzzle everything out and everything checks out but he doesnt truly actually struggle with anything #so its just like. okay man #and the internal monologue style of the writing is just. SO internal monologue #i think the movie did a really great job of keeping the silliness of the internal monologue tone while actually heightening the #sheer drama and emotional stakes of everything #and overall making grace more likeable because he isnt spouting MATH EVERY 2 seconds #brot posts #also the original comment. yes this book is SO easy to read #because honestly most of the scifi technobabble is SO technobabble that even as someone interested in it #i just read it and move on without actually thinking about it bc its just. not written engagingly #its just this smart guy being smart with no real struggle to it #so its just like okay man. okayyy #and outside of the technobabble its written in SUCH AN INTERNAL MONOLOGUE WAY that its just like #its so easy to read! i just started this 48 hours ago and im already almost done with it #its like 450ish pages and im just ripping through it #ALL THIS TO SAY ITS NOT A BAD BOOK AND I DONT DISLIKE IT i just like the movie a lot better
