Din: *sigh*

Grogu: Baba?

Din: I don’t know where we’re supposed to go from here. I… didn’t think we’d be leaving together.

Grogu: Baba.

Din: You say that a lot, you know. Wait. Is that…? Is ‘Baba’… what you call me?

Grogu: *points to himself* Ah (ad’ika). *points to Din* Baba.

Din: That’s, that’s… I didn’t notice that before.

Din: I used to call my father that. My birth father. I called him ‘Baba.’ Mama told me it was my first word. It took a while, but I eventually gave that name to someone else, to the man who rescued me: my buir.

Din: He gave me this. His father had it made for him when he was born and he carried it with him his whole life until he... until he found me and... called me his ad.

Din: I can’t train you as a Jedi. And I can’t train you to fight like a Mandalorian; you would only get hurt. But I can care for you. I can be your buir. My ancestors can be your ancestors. I will not take what you were away from you; it will always be a part of you. But you can also be a part of me, if... if it’s what you really want.

Din: Ni kyr'tayl gai sa'ad. I know your name as my child, Grogu Djarin.

Din: *sigh*

I wrote this chapter back in 2021, determined to fix the separation of father and son. It remains one of my favourite moments of anything I’ve ever written. It’s not terribly dialogue heavy; there’s a lot of physical communication I don’t think I quite yet have the skill to convey but I sure did enjoy making this.
